31 May 2012

Breakfast: spoon sized shredded wheat and coffee
Snack: left over bean-free all-meat chili with crackers and cat sup and a can of Pepsi One.

Lunch:  at "Tres Amigos" for burritos and something else, rice and beans, a glass of "Diet Coke" and  some iced water.

Movie Snack: nachos and cheese and a medium "Diet Pepsi"

Sack of some baked potatoe skins at a Relay Walk For Life Bank Night. Then, I had a glass off Land Shark on tap...it was good...

Dinner: At Casey's Cowtown for roast beef and mashed potatoes and brown gravy. The veggie was  inedible; it was green beans...

Results: about 2 hours after going to bed, I was in the main bathroom blowing chunks. This was not one of my usual "put my finger down my throat".  This was all one it own and I was glad I made it to the toilet in time! I was astonished at how much was coming up.

_____Breakfast:  Cheerios and  coffee

________Lunch:  I did a double red blood donation and afterwards I had a little bit of chips with beans and hamburger and three cans of Orange Juice. I had a little bag of chips with sausa on it. Then, I decided to goto Wendy' but the line was way too long.

_______Dinner: a Healthy Choice beef, rice and broccoli dinner and a bottle of water. I had a bottle of water with this.

Memorial Day 2012

_____Breakfast: cheerios and coffee
________Lunch:  at Long Dong Silvers for the #4 and I got fish and chicken "planks", fries and a medium "Diet Coke"
_______Dinner:  We went to Applebys and  I
  • split an order of cheese sticks with Kathie
  • ate  most of a 12 oz rib eye steak (took the left overs home)
  • ate most of a baked potatoe (took the left overs home)
  • drank a glass of an interesting beer on tap and
  • drank a glass of Bud on tap
I would have been happier if Appleby had "Land Shark" but they didn't.

The service was adequate once the waiter realized we were there.

25 May 2012

Breakfast: cherios and coffee
Lunch: at Montana MIke's for:
  • rolls and butter
  • ½ pound hamburger with mayo, mustard and ketchup
  • lots of fries (I didn't get many so I asked our waitress for more...)
  • two glasses of "Diet Pepsi"
Our waitress was a bit slow as it was a bit busy. Still, she was very helpful so the service rates between average and above average...
Dinner: I worked thru dinner and never got around to having one...
About 10 pm, I was hungry enough to eat 6 little Oreos; their sugar content should jack my blood sugar from the pit it must have fallen in due to missing dinner...

After getting home, I had a can of cream of chicken soup and a preanut butter and honey on a slice of sour dough bread and a gin-n-tonic

Thursday, May 24, 2012

24 May 2012

Breakfast: the last little daub of my home made SOS on a slice of sour dough bread and then a bowl of cherios and coffee

Lunch: we went to a "Chinese/Mexican/American" place called "King's Buffet". I had a couple of chicken dishs, some beef dishs, two types of soup (sampled them really), chocolate pudding and two glasses of "Diet Pepsi".

This is a buffet so you might not expect good service. The waitress not only remembers how I like my "Diet Pepsi" (with 'no ice please") but comes around to see if there is anything she can do for her customers. These little Chinese ladies could give lessons to the "wait staff" at the Boot Hill Casino Restaurant!

We got above average service!

Snack: a few bites of chocolate fudge and coffee

Dinner: Healthy Choice Classic Meat Loaf dinner, iced water and a couple of little Oreos..

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

23 May 2012

Breakfast: nearly the rest of the SOS on sour dough bread and coffee
Lunch: at Casey's Cowtown for
  • chicken fried chicken
  • mashed potatoes with white gravy
  • corn
  • roll with grape jelly
  • and iced water
The service was quite good as was the food.
Snack: I was getting very hungry and had the shakes; three little Oreos set me straight. (When I was first diagnosed, I would never have believed that pills could put me into hypoglycemia.)
Dinner: a Marie Calender pork chop, mashed potatoes with cheddar cheese topping and iced water. I had the last of the little Oreos.

22 May 2012

Breakfast: homemade SOS on sour dough bread and coffee

Lunch: can of chicken noodle soup and a peanut butter and grape jelly
sandwich

Dinner: We went to a fund raiser at the local Knights of Columbus. The
occasion was a beer tasting with nine home made beers. These were
basically dark beers. The first was a bit strong but was also the
mildest of the lot. There were two beers of which I drank about half and
didn't finish and a third which I drank a sip and simply could not
finish; it was way too strong and bitter.

We had fretos and water to clear the taste of previous beers from our
mouths. The main course was meatballs with a rice laden tomatoe sauce.
It was interesting and unusual.

We left after the tasting was done and when we got home, I boiled a
couple of ears of corn and they were better than the meatballs...

  • an  apple turnover
  • coffee
  • orange juice

Snack: gin-n-tonic

19 May 2012

Breakfast:  A peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich on toasted sour dough and coffee

Lunch: We went to Napoli's at the Garden City, Kansas airport for:
  • fresh made bread with nice butter
  • spaghetti with meat sauce, meat balls and sausage slices
  • "Diet Pepsi", 2 glasses
Food excellent, service excellent

Dinner: at the Dodge City "Boot Hill Casino" restaurant and then the Saloon
  • salad
  • a small cup of potatoe soup
  • several tablespoons of what felt and tasted like instant vanilla pudding
  • 12 oz char broiled rib eye steak
  • large baked potatoe with
    • butter,
    • sour creamme
    • and unfortunately the bacon
  • two Budweiser
  • glass of iced water
Food excellent, service extremely bad

Casino at the "Boot Hill Casino": I had a Strawberry Dacheri while sitting at a table reading "Destroyer of Worlds" by Larry Niven (wonderful novel). Then, I went and sat next to Kathie at the penny slots and I won some and lost some. I think I came out about 26¢ ahead; I hope the IRS is not expecting me to declare this massive income next year. How about the $8 I lost two months ago?

Excellent Service:  We had lunch at Napoli's where we were greeted quickly and taken to a table. The waitress was clearly watching us and attended us quickly. It made for a very nice experience. Our waitress was quick to ask if we wanted more rolls, if I wanted another "Diet Pepsi" or if Kathie wanted another water. She didn't fawn on us and handled her duties with charm and grace.

Piss poor service: When we ate dinner, "our" waiter had maybe five (5) tables. He took our order, didn't know what beers he had and didn't have a list. I settled on my new default, Budweiser, as I like lagers, don't like dark beers, dislike "lite" or "light" beers on principle or their poor taste and despise "Michelob  ULTRA".

Our dinner was brought out by a "runner".
"Our" waiter was busy at his other tables and simply did not wander down our way. I had to wave my empty Bud at him as he hustled past our table. (No, he did not drop by to ask if we wanted anything.)
"Our" waiter dropped off the bill without asking if we wanted desert. We did not want desert but we did want to be asked and to be given the chance to say no.

Excellent service: I had a Strawberry Daiquiri at the bar and then went to see how Kathie was doing. After she blew through a $20, we went back to the bar. There, Kathie noticed they had "Land Shark" on tap. I immediately order a glass and said "our waiter did not tell us about the Land Shark". She replied, "I don't think he knows".

The bar tender handled her waitress well, paid attention to her customers and had a nice sense of humour. Kathie and I played the "poker machines" and I lost $380.

16 May 2012

Breakfast: cherios and coffee
Lunch: At Casey's Cowtown for roast beef, mashed potatoes, brown gravy, roll with butter and grape jelly and iced water
Snack: some chocolate pudding
Dinner: Marie Calendar chicken, noodle, broccoli and sauce and iced water  and then some little Oreos...

15 Mary 2012

Breakfast: some bacon cooked in my larger cast iron skillet and a bowl of spoon sized shredded wheat and coffee

Snack: coffee and a square of dark chocolate

Lunch: at "Tres Amigos" for two items which I don't remember and rice and beans with "Diet Coke"

The service was quite good. The new management has expanded the interior (got rid of the buffet), lightened the room up with lighter colored wood and have really improved the food and appearance of the restaurant. It is worth going to...
Dinner: a Healthy Choice Sundried Tomato and Chicken Alfredo (Chicken Tenderloions and Whole Grain Pasta in Creamy Alferedo Sauce with Sundried Tomatoes and Broccoli)

Monday, May 14, 2012

14 May 2012

Breakfast: left over spaghetti sauce and fresh noodles plus coffee
Lunch: at Pizza Hut for a couple of slices of meat pizza, a slice of apple pie pizza and some vanilla pudding with "Diet Pepsi"
After lunch, I went to the Diabetic Support meeting where my blood sugar was tested and  came out as A1C of 6.3 and 115 for the post lunch. Victoria and I were quite happy...
Dinner: Healthy Choice meatloaf dinner and iced water and not a minute too soon! I am more than hungry; I have the shakes (and who says a type 2 on pills can't get "a touch of hypoglycemia"?)
Desert: several little Oreos and cold water

Pre-bed snack: some spaghetti noodles with cheese and catsup and an MGD

a Bizarro cartoon and diabetes

Do you really wonder why we are a nation of fat fracks?

Do you really wonder why the number (in Kansas) of type two diabetes is growing?

We can take dubious pride in being the descendants of folks who could gained weight and survived famines. This is truly a dubious distinction! At least we can take dubious pride in knowing we're taking the rest of the "advanced" world down with us.  (Is this called leadership?)

Diabetes's chocolate pudding

My Mother's all meat meal. Something she did not let my brothers and I try and which she claimed to not remember decades later. (I believed her.)

Tuna noodle casserole

"cottage cheese"

I found a cottage cheese recipe and modified it to:
  • one cup of 2% milk
  • about ½ teaspoon ionized salt
I warmed this mixture to about 130° and stirred in four tablespoons of white vinegar. After letting this separating mixture sit for 5 minutes,  I poured it into a calender lined with a very clean handkerchief. After letting it sit about 5 minutes, I took the handkerchief out, ran cold water over the cheese, squeezed it dry and scraped the cheese into a large bowl. Then, I added enough creamme to made the fresh made cottage cheese look like cottage cheese.

I got my wife to sample it. She made an awful face before putting the cottage cheese into her mouth. She said it "needed salt". So, I handed her a box of sea salt. She tried it, said she liked it and said she didn't want to deprived me of the cottage cheese. (I will admit this was not an original recipe; this was something I heavily modified from a "real" recipe.

  • coffee
________Lunch: ham sandwich and cold water

_______Dinner: Applebys
  • a fancy tomatoe soup
  • streak with baked potatoe
  • a larger shot glass with a sundae in it
The place was very crowded and we were a bit worried the soup would be brought out with the main course. It wasn't; they brought the soup out first and gave us time to eat it. (We will always remember the night we went to "Bad Habits Bar and Grill" and they brought the cheese sticks, salad and main course out at the same time. I remember my wife still tipped the waiter; she said it was not his fault...

4 May 2012

_____Breakfast:  from Burger King, SOS and coffee; they did not include the tater tots.

I am used to this young Mexican woman working the register at 7 am. She remembers what I like to order. Instead, there was a young tatoed fellow who needed help in ringing up my order. I wonder if he and the other young guy accidentally left off the tater tots?

________Lunch: We went o King's Buffet for a variety of chicken and some beef dishes, rice, "Diet Pepsi" and a couple of tablespoons of chocolate pudding.

_______Dinner: Went to Subway for a foot long chicken breast sub with cheddar cheese and lettuce and lots of mayo; I also drank water with this at home.

Pre-Bed Snack: gin-h-tonic

Thursday, May 03, 2012

3 May 2012

_____Breakfast: from McDonalds: pancakes and a single sausage patty and coffee

________Lunch:  at "Tre Amigos" for a couple of Mexican dishes and a "Diet Coke". They kept screwing  up my refill and tried to give me a "Dr. Pepper" twice rather than a "Diet Coke". We figure this was a language problem...

After lunch, I had a sudden craving for an ice creamme cone so I went to Dairy Queen and had one. Ater this, I started shaking, felt weak and decided I needed to get home so I cancelled the rest of my afternoon plans and went home. I checked my blood sugar and it was 79! This for me is hypoglycemia and I wonder what it would have been before I had the ice creamme. I felt crappy for a while so I let myself nodd off on the couch and felt a bit better after a 25 minute (or so) nap.

_______Dinner:  Healthy Choice Bar-B-Que and water and a post dinner score of 156. I remember bad mouthing my youngest brother for not getting his own blood sugar under control. This was years before I was diagnosed and before I learnt how hard this control can be...

Pre-Bed Snack:  a small amount of chocolate cake and a gin-n-tonic

Wednesday, May 02, 2012

2 May 2012

Breakfast: a 3 egg "omlette", a peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich made with 2 slices sour dough bread and coffee

The omlette was made in a little plastic "grill". You put half the mixed eggs on one side, the other half on the other side and microwave for two minutes. Then, put the chopped up cheese (Tillamook Extra Sharp) on one side, flip the other lid on top of the cheese and microwave for another half minute.
Snack: a couple of small pieces of the left over chocolate cake from yesterday
Lunch: at Casey's Cowtown for a "naked" (no veggies) hamburger, large fries and glass of "Diet Coke" with no ice
Snack: piece of chocolate cake...

Dinner: we went to "The Bad Habits Bar and Grill"  and I had:
  • split an order of cheese sticks with Kathie
  • salad with Thousand Island Dressing
