26 June 2012

Breakfast: 3 boiled eggs and two cups of coffee

Lunch: at the Rat for
  • several pieces of chicken (legs and one broiled breast)
  • mashed potatoes with brown gravy and cottage cheese
  • chocolate pudding with whipped creamme in a pie
  • medium "Diet Coke"
Snack: a chunk of dark chocolate

Dinner: Healthy Choice Classic Meat Loaf and iced water and an ice creamme sandwich (never be asked by a friend going to a grocery store if you want anything when you are hungry! You ask for unsafe items...)

hypoglycemia?

I had several slices of extra sharp Tillamook Cheddar Cheese last night before going to bed. Then, around 2:40 am, I awoke feeling very hungry. Around 3 am, I decided there was no point in putting matters off any longers, So I stumbled to the kitchen, took some dark chocolate from the freezer and washed it down with tap water. Then, I went back to bed and waited for the nervousness and hunger to go away.

They did.

I later remembered stumbling towards the kitchen and thought it was just late night poor coordination. I tested my blood sugar after getting up this morning and found it to be 92. I guess it had been lower when I'd "enjoyed" the dark chocolate.

Tonight, I'll have something like a peanut butter on a slice of sour dough bread and cold water. This should last me till breakfast.

After the nice cool Oregon weather, this is what Kansas had in store for us
Breakfast: a scant single serving of <tty>instant grits</tty> with butter and two cups of coffee
Lunch: a whopper, with large fries (split with Kathie) and a large "Diet Coke". The drive up clerk didn't seem to understand and so screwed up the order by not putting mustard or ketchup on Kathie's whopper. Oh, well...
Snack: cup of coffee and a chunk of dark chocolate.
Dinner: Marie Callender's Country Fried Pork Chop and Gravy (Breaded Pork Chop with Cheddar Topped Mashed Potatoes, Home-Style Gravy andf Cinnamon Glazed Apples) and iced water.
Snack: little Oreos and iced water...

Day 2 on the wagon

24 June 2012

I slept horribly last night.  I was confortably asleep when I awoke to an intense pain across my abdomin just below my breast bone.  After a few minutes, I went to the Hotel bathrooon and drank some anti-acid. I also took a couple of anti-pain pills and went back to bed.  There, I kept rolling from my left side to right side and back to my back.

Then, I went to the bathroom and drank a couple of glasses of cold water.  My water and stomach contents did not stay down!  I barfed but this did not help me anyway!  I also had "lower digestive track problems" (diahreia) I spent the rest of the night on my right side, then on my back (with the initial high shot of pain).  After being on my back, I went back to my right side and had tghe same surge of pain.

Finally, I decided to take a risk and sleep on my left side. The pain surge was minor and didn't last long.  I finally got some sleep.  Kathie had a hard time getting me out of bed.

_____Breakfast:  at the Wichita Double Tree Restraunt where I took it easy on the buffet:
  • pork SOS on baked potatoe chunks and
  • a soft boiled egg on a bisuit, with a slice of ham between the two and a cheese sauce over it all. We don't remember what this is called
  • coffee and
  • iced water (Kathie figured I was probably dehydrated)
________Lunch: a Healthy Choice fish meal and iced water

At 4:21 pm, my stomach has stgarted hurting again.  Time for some cold water.

_______Dinner: We went to Sonic and I ordered the chicken stripes and got "Tator Tots" when I thought I was going to get french fries and also got two onion rings thrown in. I had a "Diet Coke". After we had waited for about 8 minutes, Kathie rang the bell and got "can we help you"? "Yes, we'd like our order." "Ah, it's ah, coming right now!"

It was clear the clerk who took our order had lost our order. If we had quietly pulled out and gone elsewhere, they may never have discovered this!

Anyway, I had the chicken, a bite of one onion ring and several "tator tots". (I don't like them...)

The service was extremely poor and they are on out "invisible store list" for the time being...

Pre-Bed Snack: a couple of glasses of water. After this morning's stomach debachle and given my stomach still hurts, I am on the wagon for the foreseeable future!

23 June 2012

_____Breakfast: a Starbucks latte and a Starbucks chocolate muffin at 5 am
________Lunch:  Hamburger, fries and two Bud at the Wichita Airport bar/restaurant
Snack:   We checked into the Wichita Airport Double Tree (formerly the Hilton) and I had a freshly baked chocolate cookie and coffee
_______Dinner:  We went to the Wichita, Kansas, Outback Steak House and I had:
  • brown bread with butter
  • about a 6 oz fried piece of skinless, boneless chicken
  • an 8 oz ribeye
  • loaded baked potatoe
  • a bottle of Budweiser (which is now a premium beer compared to the "light" or "lite" beer and the watered down piss called "Michaelob Ultra" - not a "beer" sailors would have drank "in my day".
The manager clearly had "worried feet" as he came around to ask how we liked the meal and sked about specific items on the menu. The service was a bit spotty at the end since Kathie had to flag down our waiter. Still, the service was better than the Boot Hill Casino Restaurant...

Pre-Bed Snack: We went to a booze store and a got a 4 pack of Sutter Home White Zin (187 milliliters each).

22 June 2012

_____Breakfast: at my Father-in-Laws, where he cooked:

  • bacon well fried
  • two eggs boiled in the bacon fat
  • coffee
  • slice of whole wheat toast with butter

________Lunch: at Giovannis in Beaverton, Oregon where I had:

  • green salad with Italian dressing
  • luncheon sized spagethie with meat sauce and a piece of Italian sausage
  • garlic bread
  • two glasses of "Diet Coke"
The service was fine, even if the waitress brought ice in my first "Diet Coke, no ice, please".

Part of their menu reads: "GIOVANNI'S CON POMODORO - sauteed with olive oil, roma tomatoes, garlic and parmigiano cheese"  If I even finish my "National Novel Writing Month" novel, that I got about half way through in 2009, I am going to have one character (a Navy cook or Commissaryman 3rd Class) make this for another (a LTjg in hack).
_______Dinner:  We went to the Portland Oregon Airport Restaurant where I had:
  • salmon bisque, cup of
  • french fries
  • cole slaw
  • two local brews
Back at the hotel (Porland Oregon Airport Double Tree) for a bottle of Bud (after the grease level in the fish, I did well to keep dinner down...)

The Good News from 1 Timothy 54

This is Bible Advise I can live with, even if I don't like the taste of most wine and end up needing a Pepto Bismo chaser after drinking most wine. Red wine is generally too sour ("dry"), white wine too sweet and about the only wine I enjoy is  White Zin. But, I'm diabetic so I can't drink much of it. I guess I'll just have to struggle along with gin-and-tonic or beer: Land Shark, MGD, Mic Lager. Apparently, the makers of "Henry Winehart's Private Reserve" have improved the recipe so much that most previous fans will not touch it!

Having said this, I am pleased to present my favourite part of 1 Timothy:

Book 54  1 Timothy

54:005:023 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine other infirmities."

21 June 2012

_____Breakfast:   I made SOS and had this on two slices of whole wheat bread. My recipe was:

  • 1½ pounds of 97% meat, 3% fat hamburger
  • 3 cups of whole milk
  • about 3 teaspoons of Worcester Sauce
  • a ¼ cup of (wheat) flour
I browned the hamburger and drained the fat. Then, I sprinkled the flour over the browned hamburger and stirred in in. I added the Worcester Sauce to the milk, poured this over the meat, stirred it in and "reduced" it a bit. I stopped cooking it when my wife and Father-in-Law said they were ready for breakfast.

This went over very well...

________Lunch: We went to a nice place in the Washington Square Mall, in Beaverton, Oregon and I had spaghetti with meat sauce, "Diet Coke" and we split an order of a very rich chocolate cake with ice creamme. We at on the balcony of this restaurant. It was very pleasant.

_______Dinner: We went to a new place in Tigard, Oregon, with Kathie, her sister Linda, and their Father. We split an order of cheese sticks. I had roast beef, mashed potatoes and mixed steamed veggies (mainly chunks of carrots.

Pre-Bed Snack: a couple of small glasses of white whine wine. I was helping Kathie to finish off a bottle as we could not take it on the plane with us. This was a serious mistake! I awoke a couple of hours after going to bed and vomited up most of dinner and whine wine.

Friday night, I will have something very light on fat and if I am hungry when I go to bed, I can at least know I won't wake up swallowing vomit...

I have the quirk of not liking to vomit a couple of hours after going to bed. It makes me think of how some rock stars vomited and drowned on said vomit in the late 1960s. One died in 1970 and one of our drill instructors gloated about this. I was in Boot Camp at the time and so could not verify his story. Would a Drill Instructor fuck with his boot's heads? Yes, he would!

The service at lunch was excellent and the service at dinner was above average

It is a pity that the "wait staff" at most of the places we go to in Kansas can not experience what good service is all about. They - especially the "wait staff" at the Boot Hill Casino Restaurant and frequently the "wait staff" at Applebys would be in for a rude awakening!

However, we didn't see any managers so, according to Anthony Bourdain, neither place had managers "with worried feet". (I think this is how he put it.)

Oddly enough, telling me that doesn’t get my stomach to behave any more than me telling my stomach to behave. It does make her feel better, though.

Breakfast: cherios and a single cup of coffee

Snack: a single cup of coffee

Lunch: a can of Healthy Choice chicken and rice soup, a peanut butter and grape jelly on sour dough bread sandwich and cold water

Snack: a big square of dark chocolate

I thought about another cup of coffee but my stomach was queasy and I decided I did not wish to confirm the hypothesis "caffeine is now upsetting my stomach"!

It is now 6:35 pm and I fear I'm on the verge of vomiting. I'm almost convinced I should skip dinner (Healthy Choice meatloaf dinner) but I know better than to do that...

Finally, at 9:22 pm, I gave in and bought 6 little Oreos from the office vending machine. I ate them to jack my blood sugar and hopefully, prevent hypoglycemia. I am going to have to watch the forecasts better and set up a cold food emergency rations systems. Something like carrots, a chunked up apple and one of my typically overbaked pork chops...

some history of beer

I am watching a history channel show (that is actually history), which includes the history of beer. Folks thousands of years ago thought beer had been sent down by Gods or Goddesses. If that is the case, then light beer must have been sent by a fallen angel and "Michelob Ultra" by the worst of the fallen angels. I'm just joking; "Mic Ultra" was clearly invented by a beer hater.

1 June 2012

_____Breakfast: cherios and coffee
Snack: more coffee and some little Oreos and incredible heart burn. A friend gave me some Tums that really didin't help. I helped Kathie take our big cat to the vet office for a hair cut, Then, I sat on the couch, dozing and later realized I should have gone to the clinic.

_______Lunch: two peanut butter and honey on a single slice of sour dough each. I felt wretched.
We got our hair cut and the hair dresser got me a glass of water. I chugged it and started feeling better. She brought me a larger glass of water and that set me straight!

_______Dinner:  We went to Appleys anf I had:
  • bowl of French Onion Soup
  • 7 oz ribeye steak (which was plenty big enough!)
  • chunked potatoes
  • steamed broccoli florets
  • ice water
I was quite pleased with our waitress and her service. She was attentative, asked Kathie if she wanted another alcoholic drink (she didn't) and asked if we wanted desert before she brought the bill. (We didin't.)

The service was excellent!
