Christmas Day

Breakfast: We had forgotten to buy bacon the day before so Kathie lost her temper. I had scrambled eggs and coffee.

Lunch:

Dinner: we went to the Casino for their buffet and I had:
  • salad with Thousand Island Dressing
  • small piece of boneless, skinned chicken in a fancy sauce
  • some little chunks of potatoe
  • a big slice and a little slice of roast beef grilled to make it more well done
  • a MIller Genuine Draft beer
  • two types of desert: flan and something harder to describe
What was sad is that I could not finish all the roast beef and they would not let me take the left over slap of beef out; this was a buffet and they dindn't want me to take food simply to haul it out. I had intended to eat it all but could not. So, a nice piece of roast beef, sliced and grilled for me, had to me shit canned...

The food was excellent, the service quite nice and the atmosphere not too bad...

Christmas Eve

Breakfast: I'm writing this on the 26th and have forgotten...

Lunch: hamberger, fries and Diet Pepsi

Dinner; at Kathie's Aunt, sliced ham and a nice potatoe dish and a slice of choclate fudge desert

Sadly, it was the combination of three strange dogs, "little old lady house spell" and whatever but I had a real asma attack. I had forgotten my inhailor and had trouble breathing until we were about half way back. It included constricted breathing and dry throat. I was fine by the time we got back home; I should have treated this like a long distacne trip and packed the inhailor...

23 December 2010

_____Breakfast: not a traditional one but
  • stewed pork chops
  • rice
  • coffee

________Lunch: I went to that new Italian place and had
  • two slices of loaf shaped white bread (think 'Wonder Bread") dipped in sauce
  • two and a half spiced bread sticke
  • dipped in olive oil and
  • spaghetti in meatless sauce
  • two glasses of Diet Coke
_______Dinner: We went to the new place at the public golf course club house, Mariah Hills Restaurant and had
  • nice salad with Thousand Island Dressing
  • excellent steak with "Ham's topping" (butter and spices)
  • baked potatoe
  • small piece of desert
  • water
I ate about half of my dinner and ate the left overs for breakfast the next mooring.

I think it is safe to say this is the finest Steak place you can go to in Dodge City Kansas. This is because
  • the food is simply excellent
  • the service is very good
  • the view from the dining room windows is great and
  • the owner ("Ham") has "worried feet" and checks the customers to see is the customers are happy and if everything is going well
In "Kitchen Confidental",  Anthony Burdoine wrote of the need for the manager to have "worried feet". That is, for the manager of the restaurant to make sure everything is going well and that only happy customers will walk out. It is a well known fact that angry customers will tell at least ten (10!) other people of their dissatisfaction. I personally try for higher numbers. Happy customers don't tend to tell as many people.

So, as a happy customer, I can safely say go to Mariah Hills for a great steak dinner!

Pre-Bed Snack:  gin-n-tonic

22 December 2010

Breakfast: not a traditional one but
  • stewed pork chops
  • rice
  • coffee
There are left overs for tomorrow morning.

Snack: a piece of coffee cake and coffee

Lunch:
Went to McDonald's and ordered
  • A third pound hamburger with just catchup and mustard  (It took a couple of tries before this seemed to sink in and I guess the two slices of "processed cheese" just magically appeared on their own!)
  • fries
  • Diet Coke, no ice
Dinner: a Healthy Choice meatloaf, mashed potatoes and  brown gravy, corn and iced water

As an aside, the Burger King was back in service. My wife wanted to go there for lunch but I convinced her we should let them fully clean up after whatever maintenance they did.

Wednesday, December 22, 2010

21 December 2010

Breakfast: An odd mixture of instant grits and additions:
  • two packets of instant grits
  • a small piece of well cooked hamburger, chopped up...
  • three hard boiled eggs
  • squirt of mustard (too much as it turned out...
  • coffee
Lunch: We argued and finally decided on Burger King. However, when we got to Burger King, Kathie commented: "I wonder if they're open; there aren't any cars". We pulled up to the front and saw a sign on the door which read "We're closed for maintenance and regret any inconvenience this causes." [definitely words to that effect, in other words, I'm not remembering the whole sign!]

I looked in the window and saw a woman looking back. I could not tell if she was drinking something or smoking a cigarette. The chairs were up on the tables. This is a very bad sign; usually, chairs on tables means a restaurant is going to be closed for a long time...

We decided to go to McDonald's but clearly a lot of Burger King fans had decided to do the same thing and the drive through line a McD's was backed up into the street. So, we went to Pizza Hutt. In the past, I have bitched about the
  • poor service
  • merely adequate food
  • slow resupply of pizza
  • slow refill of my "Diet Pepsi, no ice"
I now repent this. They have a new manager and he really has turned this Pizza Hut around!
  • the service is now much better
  • the food tastes better
  • they resupply the pizza much quicker and
  • I get refills of my Diet Pepsi without having to ask for them.
Dinner: a Healthy Choice Steamer meal and refrigerator cold water...

20 December 2010

Breakfast: oatmeal and peanut butter and grape jelly on a hamburger bun and coffee

Snack: little Oreos and coffee

Lunch:  We went to "King's Buffet" and had a mixture of beef and chicken dishs, some rice, some sliced potatoes and choc pudding. Our waitress, who is Oriental (Chinese?) and who speaks English as a second language, had no problem with the "Diet Pepsi, no ice".

Dinner:
Healthy Choice beef, potatoes, carrots, apple crisp and refrigerator water. (Oh, yeah, a gin-n-tonic...)

Monday, December 20, 2010

20 December 2010

19 December 2010

Breakfast: wheaties and coffee

Lunch: hamberger and bowl of tomoatoe soup (with oyster cracker) and refrigerator water

Snack: (at the local movie theater): popcorn and most of a large "Diet Pepsi"

Dinner: Healty Choice roast beef, potatoes, carrots and apple crisp with water and a gin-n-tonic for "desert"

Sunday, December 19, 2010

18 December 2010

Breakfast: Egg salad sandwich and chips, plus coffee and cold water

Lunch: At this Mexican Place at the local mall:
  • taco
  • hamburger wrapped in dough (I don't recall the name)
  • red rice
  • glass Diet Pepsi without ice...
Unless I am totally wrong, those are "ice cubes" in my "Diet Pepsi, no ice".  My wife reminded me the waitresses are so used to putting ice in drinks that she probably wasn't aware of icing up my "Diet Pepsi, no ice". Still it annoys the crap out of me...

The service was simply awful! I mean really, really poor. They put us in a bad location (against a wall and hidden by the bar) and then ignored us until the waitress trundled up to take our order. I ordered Flan for desert and she wanted to bring it to me before the meal! Right there, I realized we were going to have problems! (This was a mall so being "Anglo" in a place with lots of Mexican customers should not have a problem.) We got the chips and salsa and eventually the food. "Our" waitress kept going to the other tables and I ended up having to wave at her to get her to come over and refill my drink.

When the meal was over, and "our" waitress came over to clear the table, my wife reminded her: "Where is his Flan order?"

"Oh."

We had to go to the cashier's station to get our bill. The Flan order was on the bill and we could well have paid for flan not received if we had not been so pissed off that we carefully read the bill.

That took about another eight minutes to get the Flan and the flan was fine

We had to go to the cashier's station to get our bill. The Flan order was on the bill and we could well have paid for flan not received if we had not been so pissed off that we carefully read the bill.

The service sucked; I hope my wife remembered that when she left the tip, in cash, on the table. But, knowing her, she had to have over tipped...

Dinner: We had the office Christmas Party at Casey's Cowtown. The meal consisted of:
  • salad with a white dressing
  • overcooked ribeye steak
  • baked potatoe
  • roll and butter
  • iced water
The steak was a bit overdone but then Mike Casey had a house full of people doing Christmas Parties. So, it was excusable.

14 December 2010

Breakfast: wheaties, a banana and coffee

Lunch: Buffet at the "new" Mexican place owned by Mike Casey and a couple of "Diet Pepsis"

Dinner:  We went to the new Miara {sp} Hills restaurant and I had
  • small salad with a spicy Thousand Island Dressing
  • a 12 oz (yes twelve ounce!) Fillet Mignon and
  • a nice sized baked potatoe plus (since I was the designated driver)
  • several glasses of ice water
In early April, we went to a place called "Hams", said to be the "best steak house in Dodge City". This restaurant was small and looked like a roadside diner; the steak was excellent and the side dishes very nice. They even had a nice selection of beers (that is, beers whose names did not include the words "Light" or "Lite" or "Ultra") and I was the designated drinker vice designated driver for a change...

The owner of Hams got the contract to run a restaurant at the city owned clubhouse at the city owned golf course. So, of course, we went. (Actually, I think Kathie looked at the "Healthy Choice" meals she had just brought home from Dillions and was thinking "I could go for an unHealthy Choice". I was game for "unHealthy" myself. Of course, I was game for "unHealthy"! If I wasn't, I might not be a diabetic looking at having to use Levemir injected insulin in about 1½ months!)

The service was fine, the food excellent, the view from the dining room quite nice and all-in-all, it was an excellent evening at a very nice place.

It looks like Dodge City has got a new and best-in-town steak house!

Tuesday, December 14, 2010

13 December 2010

Breakfast: wheaties and coffee

Lunch: at "Pizza Hut" (and what is it my wife sees in this place?)
  • several (3) pieces of meat pizza
  • two slices of apple pizza
  • small dish of pudding
  • "Diet Coke"
The service was good; out waitress actually came over with the drink refill pitcher and insisted on refilling my drink ... as we were rising to leave!

None the less, she made the effort and we tipped her for it. I must have gotten too much sugar because I felt wretched for most of the rest of the afternoon.

Dinner: A Healthy Chice Bar-B-Que chicken, potatoe and apple desert and refrigerator cold water

Monday, December 13, 2010

12 December 2010

Breakfast: Healthy Choice Classic Meat Loaf (Meat Loaf with Rich Brown Gravy, Mashed Potatoes, Sweet Corn Blend & Apple Cranberry Multigrain Crisp) and coffee

Snack:a couple of glazed donuts and my bad coffee from this morning...

Lunch: We had "breakfast for lunch" and this was:
  • well cooked bacon
  • scrambled eggs
  • Serra Lee Coffee Cake
  • water
Snack: We saw a cute movie and had popcorn and "Diet Pepsi"

Dinner: Kathie made her rice pilof and put canned chicken in. The pilof was fine but the chicken sucked! I ended up putting lime juice and Worcester Sauce on it to kill that flavour that came with the chicken...

Knight cap of gnt...

Sunday, December 12, 2010

11 December 2010

Breakfast: Jimmy Dean sausage and pancakes and coffee

Lunch: rest of the left-over tuna noodle casserole, cottage cheese and grape jelly and refrigerator cold water...

Dinner: We went to "King's Buffet" for the usual assortment of chicken dishes, some beef, rice, potatoe and desert (and iced water)

Snack: a gin-n-tonic...

Saturday, December 11, 2010

10 December 2010

Breakfast: oatmeal and coffee

Lunch: Went to a new place where the "Safe" (a cafe) used to be. They had the same waitress but the cooks seemed different. The food was somewhat similar to the cafe which went out of business...
  • small salad with Thousand Island dressing (this was new)
  • "elephant stew": This is a beef and pork stew with potatoe, carrots and onions (oh yes, fungus er mushrooms)
  • a glass of "Diet Coke"
It was quite nice...

Snack: I had a serious case of the munchies and went to Dairy Queen where I got a banana split, with all fudge topping and whipped creamme. I should not have but I did have a serious case of the ice creamme munchies...

Dinner: We're on a "Healthy Choice" kick and I had their
  • meatloaf
  • mashed potatoes
  • brown gravy
  • corn
  • apple desert
  • refrigerator cold water

9 December 2010

Breakfast: We went to Burger King and I had their new breakfast of
  • scrambled eggs
  • potatoe thingies (tater tots?)
  • sausage patty
  • three medium pancakes and
  • coffee
This is their reply to the McDonald's "Big Breakfast" and has  better scrambled eggs than McD; these taste fresh made and are not dried out.

Lunch: We went to Olive Garden in Wichita and I had:
  • salad
  • bread sticks
  • spegethie with meat sauce and meat balls
  • 2 glasses of Diet Pepsi
  • had this little choclate moose in a shot glass (very nice!)
Dinner: We went to the Boot Hill Casino for their Thorsday night sea food and I had:
  • salad
  • small piece of salmon with some kind of sauce
  • several smallish scrimp (they didn't say if these were Gulf Coast or not...)
  • three slices of well done roast beef!
  • some dish based on sliced potatoes
  • two little rolls with butter
  • iced water
It was all quite good and the service today (Olive Garden and Casino) was good.

On the way from Wichita back to Dodge, I kept nodding off so we stopped at the Pratt McDonalds for coffee. That helped...

Pearl Harbour Day (69th Anniversary)

Breakfast: wheaties and coffee

Lunch: two bierocks (from Dillions), a can of Creamme of Chicken Soup (Campbell's) and a bottle of Diet Pepsi.

Dinner: some chicken I baked yesterday, boiled broccoli, a baked potatoe and iced water.

Snack: a hard shell taco with thin bean sauce (before dinner) and another hard shell taco after my 2-hours-past-dinner-blood-test.

Monday, December 06, 2010

6 December 2010

Breakfast: cheerios, a slice of toast with peanut butter and grape jelly and coffee

Lunch: My wife and I went to Sonic and I ordered
  • #1 hamburger with mustard (it came without the usual ketchup)
  • fries
  • medium "Diet Coke" with no ice (this actually came with out  ice!)
Now, normally Sonic is very tight with handing out ketchup. I expect 2 or 3 little bags of the "precious" substance so I asked for "a lot of ketchup, please". When the order was read back, it included "extra ketchup". I knew better than to get excited about this...

When we sorted out the contents of the box lunch came in, I added up the "extra ketchup" and we had

little bags of ketchup. Yup, we really got the "extra ketchup"!

Dinner: chicken I baked yesterday, a potatoe I baked today, boiled broccoli and some iced water.

5 December 2010

Breakfast: creamme of wheat, a toasted hot dog bun and coffee

Lunch: We went out to breakfast and I had
  • corned beef hash
  • two eggs over medium
  • slice of whole wheat toast with grape jelly
  • coffee
Next time, I will get the
  1. eggs over medium
  2. hash browns
  3. whole wheat toast with grape jelly and of course,
  4. coffee...
Dinner: baked boneless chicken and baked potaoes

4 December 2010

Breakfast: wheaties and coffee

Lunch: canned speghettie and "meatballs" and a slice of sour dough bread with peanut butter and grape jelly

Dinner: Healthy Choice Meatloaf, mashed potatoes with brown gravy, corn, some kind of apple desert and iced water

Snack: some cheese

3 December 2010

Breakfast: oatmeal and coffee

Lunch: chicken noodle soup from Quixos and since this didn't fill me up, an 8" "diet" pizza with tomatoes and "exotic" cheese (and water)

Dinner: We went to the Boot Hill Casino and had dinner there. Since I was still doing the "don't-eat-red-meat" test of digestive track (which involved collecting fecal samples...), I could not have red meat. I told the waitress that I could not eat red meat ("doctor's orders") and she pointed out the fish section. So, I had...
  • salad with Thousand Island dressing
  • a very small cup of a homemade noddle soup with a couple of chicken chunks in it
  • Mississippi deep fat fried catfish (good stuff!)
  • french fries
  • weird cole slaw
  • roll with butter and
  • split a "death by choclate" cake with Kathie.
Neither of us finished out meals so we ended up taking about ¼ to a third of our meals home. (I have to remember to finish off the desert tomorrow!)

We had very good service; it is so nice when the waitress actually cares about serving the customer and then does so well.

Thursday, December 02, 2010

sick as a dog (and he was too!)

Breakfast: oatmeal and coffee

Lunch: at Casey's Cowtown:
  • chicken tenders
  • french fries (probably the best in town)
  • large ear corn on the cob
  • roll with butter and
  • iced water
This was the good chicken, the good corn, the good meal; what followed was not..

Dinner: I went to the Rat KFC...
  • two piece breast and wing, extra crispy
  • mashed potatoes and brown gravy
  • small piece of corn on the cob and
  • biscuit
The wing was mostly breading and the breast was greasy; still, I was hungry and ate it...

My dog isn't so picky; he ate as much of the chicken as I gave him. I did notice it didn't taste quite up to par but I was hungry and had paid for the food.

The mashed potatoes must have been instant. They were the kind for which the phrase "hunger is the best appetizer" was invented; sadly, I wasn't hungry enough for this "Delicacy" (sarcasm!) ;-)

The small piece of corn on the cob was soggy and clearly had been stewing in the cooking water for waaaay too long!

The biscuit was crumbly and they didn't put any honey or "butter" in the bag (it tasted fine). However, I have grape jelly at home...

I drank a glass of cold water from  my refer; this was clearly the best part of the meal!

About an hour after going to bed, I was rolling around on the bed, barfing in my mouth and swallowing. I finally got up and stood over the toilet till all the dinner came back up. To paraphrase Vir Coto "It tasted so good going down, not so good  coming back up." It didn't taste so bad...

About 2 am, I woke up with my wife fussing with the dog (who had been sleeping between us). She got him to the end of the bed and I was wondering what was going on (sometimes being very hard of hearing can be a blessing!) Well, the poor dog barfed on the outer blanket. My wife stripped the blanket off the bed, walked the dog and came back to bed. Now, it could be argued that I should have been the one to take the dog outside. However, it was about 2 am and I had to un-rack (get out of bed) about 3:14 am. Had I walked the dog, I would have been so awake that I'd have lost my last hour of sleep...

So, what did dog and man have in common?

We both ate from the same piece of KFC extra crispy chicken breast!

This may be spurious reasoning but...
