31 October 2006

Breakfast: Aunt Jemima Great Starts Meal Pancakes & Sausage and a can of D.P. and a bit later, a cup of coffee...

Snack: bag of popcorn from the office machine (I forgot to write down the specifics from the bag). It's a good thing I'm leaving home in five (5!) minutes and am going to get lunch for my wife and me; I'm not only hungry but am thinking of a choclate milk shake. I guess I've got low sugar...

Lunch: At Arbys: "French Dip" with fries, part of a large order of Motzerello sticks (with tomato sauce) and a "large" glass of D.P.

Dinner: Boston Market (Home Style Meals) Roasted Port with Gravy and Garlic Redskin Mashed Potatoes and a glass of water. This didn't seem greasy enough for me to worry about vomiting later...

30 October 2006

Something curious happened last night. It seems that when I have salad with "normal" dressing, I end up peeing a couple of times that night. If I have a "low cal" dressing, I might be up three times! So, I'm going to gin up a blog entry listing the number of times I pee, with one category for peeing less than 2 hours after going to bed (the normal "drank too many liquid before bedtime") and a second for "diabetes caused late night urination" (for obvious reasons when peeing during the remainder of the night). I'll add a third entry for nights I barf (I don't process fats very well any more) and a link to my "food blogs" so that I can determine which meals are harming me. This will be a bit disquesting but from what I can tell, my food blog isn't even showing up on the "recent published blogs" so I don't think it'll get comments. The only threat to this will be me losing interest and not keeping up the entries...

Breakfast: Left over spaghetti and home made sauce plus a can of D.P. (The homemade sauce was 2 pounds of ground hamburger well browned, most of an onion added to the mix after draining the fat and adding the six (6) cans of tomato sauce, a very small pinch of chili powder, a very small pinch of ground cinnamon and several (3 to 5) shakes of a seasoning mixture called "Italian Seasoning"). Then, I took a chunk of Pharmason{sp} cheese and ground it onto the spaghetti and noodles. (So much better than the pre-ground canned stuff!)

Snack: One bag of Sunshine CHEEZE-IT Baked Snack Crackers (Net Wt. 1.5 oz)

Lots of sodium (360 mg) and some sugar (1g); no wonder this shit tastes so good! I'll have to come up with something safer to snack on at work. I suppose I could go with popcorn but the stuff from the microwave bag doesn't taste as good as these Cheeze-It. Probably a sign that the popcorn is beter for me?

I'll have to either stand at the stove and pop corn in a large pan (the old fashioned way) or finally get around to mounting my air corn popper somewhere.

Lunch: Healthy Choice Cheesy Chicken & Rice White Meat Chicken With Rice In Cheese Sauce Carrot & Broccoli Medley

Snack: I had a medium Dairy Queen choclate milk shake. I guess when I get too hungry, I just go for the sugar...

Dinner: Salad with some roasted chicken, some bacon bits, raw broccoli and low cal "French" dressing...

I drank water with this.

Breakfast: McDonald's Big Breakfast ("scrambled eggs", sausage, "potatoe" patty, bisquit with grape jelly), a can of D.P. and coffee.

Lunch: Salad, turkey, baked potatoe, gravy, roll and water. It was a meal with the Jetmore Lions...

25 October 2006

Breakfast: Creame of wheat and a baggle baked in the office oven with a little low-cal spread on it. Also, a can of D.P. and a cup or two of coffee...

Lunch: We visited the Cimarron Kansas Lions Club. I had a chicken fried steak (really breaded minute steak) with white gravy, baked potatoe, roll, salad with French dressing and a couple of glasses of D.P. It was a "Mells' Diner" experience and not up to the standards of Casey's but still a nice break from Casey's and served to point up Mike Casey's virtues.

Still, a nice little diner for a small town.

Dinner: We went to the Spearville Lions Club and had salad, baked skinless boneless chicken, a rice and brocolli caserol, a couple of rolls and water.

Snack: When we got home, I took my evening pills (especially the Metormin!) and washed it down with a small glass of white whine. Then, Kathie brought herself a glass of red wine and be a "Mic" (Michelob Lager, not that God awful "Mic Ultra" or anything "lite" or "light"...)

Tuesday, October 24, 2006

24 October 2006

Breakfast: Weight Watchers Smart Ones Chicken Parmesan Bisto Selections Chicken Parmesan roasted chicken breast and spaghetti with marinara sauce topped with cheese.

Lunch: Left over roast beef and potatoes and a pair of cans of D.P.

Snack: I had a craving for ice creamme and went to Dairy Queen for a medium ice creamme cone dipped in chocolate. It was good and killed off my craving for ice cream cones (for the moment anyway...)

Dinner: Two hamberger patties and then I went to the Diabetics Seminar at the Senior Center. There, we were served samples of a "good" salad and a very small little bisquit, a very small little oatmeal cookie and had some water. I got home, fairly hungry and had some canned chicken. Yummmy....

Monday, October 23, 2006

23October 2006

Breakfast: Aunt Jemima pancakes and sausage and a can of D.P. (I would have had a cup of coffee but the person who usually makes the morning coffee is out of the offce. I had to wait till his boss made the coffee. I could make my own pot of brew but most folks seem to think I make it too weak...)

Lunch: Healthy Choice Familiar Favorites Chicken Fettuccini Alfredo chicken Breast Chunks and Fettuccini in Alfredo Sauce.

Dinner: A McDonald's Club salad and a glass of water.

Sunday, October 22, 2006

22 October 2006

Breakfast: Creame of wheat and two slices of sour dough bread (with low-cal spread on them) toasted in the office toaster. Also, a can of DP and later, some coffee.

Lunch: The rest of my leftover stew and a half peanut butter samwhich (peanut butter on a slice of sour dough bread) and a can of D.P.

Dinner: Oven cooked pot roast, cooked with chunked potatoes and carrots plus water for a drink and a glass of white whine.

Saturday, October 21, 2006

21 October 2006

Breakfast: oatmeal and coffee (some brown sugar on the oatmeal).

Snack: Small handful of cashews. I bought these from the office "vending" machine and haven't seen the worms that "came with" the stale peanuts. I didn't actually see the worms but was told about them.

Lunch: Left over beef stew with a bag of CHEEZE-ITs.

Dinner: My wife's "Mexican". This is a soft taco shell with smashed refried beans, hamberger cooked with spices and "yellow" cheese cooked in the microwae oven and then "light" sour cream, sausa, chopped tomatoes added (two of these and the left over lettuse as a salad) and a bottle of Michelob lager (just one as my desire for a beer was gone when I drank the last mouthful) and a glass of water. Oh, yes, a partial glass of water before dinner when washing down my evening pills...

Friday, October 20, 2006

20 October 2006

Breakfast: Aunt Jemima pancakes and sausage and a cup of coffee.
Lunch: Healthy Choice Chicken Broccoli Alfredo Chicken Breast and Broccoli in Alfredo Sauce with Fettuccini Pasta and a couple of cans of D.P. plus a 1.5oz bag of CEEZE-ITs...
Dinner: A Dillion's salad with low cal French dressing and a couple of glasses of water. After testing (and a ridicious 171 it was!) I had half a peanut butter on sour dough bread samwhich. (I wonder if peanut butter right before bed is causing my noise to stuff up?)

Thursday, October 19, 2006

19 October 2006

Lunch: McDonald's Club Salad with a "large" Diet Coke.

Snack: The rest (1/2 cup or so) of low cal vanillin ice creame with a home made sauce (about 1/2 2% milk, some dark choclate, about a teaspoon of baking power and a pinch of baking soda) nuked in the microwave...

Dinner: Homemade beef stew with stew beef, onions, garlic, carrots and potatoes and "ploppers". "Ploppers" were what I called bisquit "dumplings" when I was a very young child (i.e. 45 to 50 years ago). This is a cup or so of Bisquit with enough water to get it well wetted down and they are then spooned onto the surface of the stew. They are supposed to be more than dumplings; enough flour is supposed to leach off to thicken the stew. (It didn't this time around...)

The stew was slow cooked from about 7:30 am to around 5:45 pm. There was no danger of it being undercooked...

Wednesday, October 18, 2006

18 October 2006

Breakfast: Aunt Jemima pancakes, sausage and coffee.

Lunch: (At Casey's Cowtown): Chicken Fried Chicken, Mashed potatoes with white gravy, ottage cheese and two glasses of "Diet Pepsi".

Dinner: At Appllebe;: 10 oz steak with "Cajun" seasoning, garlic mashed potatoes, veggies and glasses of Diet Pepsi. I also ate some of Kathie's fried chicken stripes and some of
the "Mexican" rice.

Home: A very small slice (the heel of the heel of the loaf) of Sour Dough Bread.

Tuesday, October 17, 2006

17 October 2006

Breakfast: Aunt Jemima pancakes and sausage, a cup of coffee,
a chunk of dark choclate and about a cup of low sodium V8.

Monday, October 16, 2006

16 October 2006

Breakfast: Cream of wheat, three half slices of toasted sour dough bread and a cup of coffee.

Snack: Small piece of dark choclate (this seemed to upset my stomach)

Lunch: McDonals's club salad and a (too large) large glass of Diet Coke.

Dinner: Healthy Choice Beef Pot Roast with Gravy/ Apple Cranberry Crisp/ Carrots/ Roasted Potatoes and a can of D.P.

Pre-bed snack: I was in a bad mood and had a large coffee cup of White Zin (it was enuf to make me feel tipsy) and part of a can of canned chicken (I didn't bother to see how much sodium this had...)
I was wondering why my "White Zin" didn't taste quite right lately. It turned out my wife had bought me Franzia White Merlot and put it in the usual spot in the refrigerator. It wasn't bad; fortunately, I've only drunk it once a month or so and I don't expect to get too fond of it...

Sunday, October 15, 2006

15 October 2006

Breakfast: Shredded wheat, coffee and a D.P.

Lunch: 1 1/2 Rubans and 1 1/2 bowls of homemade (mix) chicken soup with canned chicken added and a D.P. or two.

Dinner: Healthy Choice Chicken Margherita White Meat Chicken With Angel Hair Pasta & Roasted Garlic In Balsamic Vinaigrette Sauce and (of course) a can of D.P.

I don't dare have more than one can of D.P. since I typically eat dinner around 7:30 pm t0 8 pm (I'm at work) and that gives me just over 4 hours before I try to go to bed (around 12:15 am to 12:30 am).

Saturday, October 14, 2006

14 October 2006

Breakfast: Kathie made scrambled eggs, well cooked (for me) bacon, 1/4 tray of Serra Lee coffee cake and a can of D.P. and coffee

Snack: Most of a bag of popcorn and a can of D.P.

Dinner: A Dillion's salad...

Tuesday, October 10, 2006

10 October 2006 (partial for dinner)

Breakfast: Yes (probably Aunt Jemima)

Lunch: Not noted down...

Dinner: Salad with (unfortunately) regualar French dressing and a glass of water. This lead to a high (142) blood glucose reading. So, I had a gin and tonic (probably didn't jack that 142 any...)

death by abundance

In this Slate article, ("Please Do Not Feed the Humans" or "The global explosion of fat") William Saletan discusses how our species evolved in an environment of food scarcity. The recent (last century) abundance of food has happened too fast for evolution to counter said abundance with improved inherited "time to stop eating" mechanisms and anti-obesity, anti-diabetes, anti-heart attack mechanisms, etc. We're being killed by the survival mechanisms that allowed our ancestors to survive long enough to beget us!

I remember worrying about losing 10 pounds in high school. I also remember girls being mocked for being 5 to 10 pounds overweight. Now, I'm probably 50 pounds overweight and can't seem to lose that weight. Sadly, I work with young men who are overweight to the point of looking pregnant.

Decades ago, I noted that poor blacks in southern Mississippi seemed to be the most obese. I later realized they were eating cheap and very high calory foods. A fairly snotty and apparently anti-American Brit ("The end of obesity?" by Gwynne Dyer) commented on this as well. This Brit expected the obesity epidemic to fizzle out due to "global warming" and a return to food scarcity by the end this century. (I take a certain amount of comfort in the realization that diabetes and probable heart problems and simply age will render me dead well before then. I was born in 1951...)

In spite of my gloomy belief the human race will kill itself off in the next century or two (probably via that old standby, killing over religious differences). Perhaps not the death of the entire species, maybe a small enough fraction of the current overpopulation will survive and humans will once again be were they were for so many millienum: on the endangered species list! (I smirk whilst reading this but I really hope it doesn't happen. I want the various kids in my family and the families of friends to survive. I'd be lying if I said I worried about foreigners...)

Monday, October 09, 2006

09 October 2006

Breakfast: Cream of wheat, 11/2 slices of whole wheat toast and a cup or two of coffee.

Lunch: An Arby salad and part of a large order of "onion peddles" and a D.P.

Sunday, October 08, 2006

08 October 2006

Breakfast: Aunt Jemima pancakes and sausage with a cup of coffee.

Lunch: Kathie made roast chicken with dressing and broccoli flowers. I also had a couple of cans of D.P. (No intestional distress however...)

Dinner: We held a bit of a batchelor party for a fellow at work. We split a couple of take out pizzas (all meat on 1/2 and meat on the other). I had a couple of cans of D.P. (with no intestional distress)

Home: I wanted to have a gin and tonic but we were out of gin so I had tonic and a squirt of lemon juice. (I didn't want to waste any lime juice.) I told myself "this is a Sunday so I'll have to buy more gin tomorrow in spite of telling Kathie that I think we drink too much of it..." Silly me! I forgot that in Kansas not only are the booze shops (for "hard stuff") closed on Sunday but they are closed on holidays...

Saturday, October 07, 2006

07 October 2006

Breakfast: Scrambled eggs, bacon (well fried), a bacon samwhich, Serra Lee coffee cake and a cup of coffee.

Lunch: A brot with sourkrat, a bierrot (not a Gemini Beirrot), a large bottle of DP and before all this: a bottle of Sasfaraks{sp}.

Friday, October 06, 2006

06 October 2006

Breakfast: Aunt Jemima pancakes, sausage and coffee.

Lunch: We went to Montana Mike's as it is our 27th wedding anniversary. I had most of a 16 oz rib eye steak (I cut out the fat and what I too full to eat), most of a "loaded" baked potatoe, most of a large roll and most of a piece of chocolate cake. I took the remnants of my lunch home with me. I also had two large glasses of Diet Pepsi.

Post lunch I again had diherra; I've either got "worms" or an excessive amount of "Diet Pepsi" gives me the trots. I think the later explanation is the likely one...

Dinner: South Beach Diet Asian Inspired Orange Beef slices & Brown rice in Orange Sauce with Broccoli, bamboo shoots & carrots. Plus some chips and a single can of D.P.

Post work snack: a couple of slices of bread with catsup after Kathie and I split a bottle of cheap champaign. This was to celebrate our 27th Wedding Anniversary.

Thursday, October 05, 2006

05 October 2006

Breakfast: Aunt Jemima pancakes and sausage and a cup of coffee.

Lunch: At the "Dodge House": A large hamberger, small amount of fries, a 20 oz bottle of water (which cost 20¢ at "Sams" but which sold for $4 at the "Cessna Arena", where we saw the "Rolling Stones") and a can of D.P.

Something didn't agree with me at lunch and I ended up with diaherra about 2 hours after eatting.

Snack before lunch: a donut; and snack after lunch: a choclate chip cookie.

Dinner: Left over brocolli from last night, left over rice pilof with store bought sliced roast beef and gravy and two (!) cans of D.P.

Not my day for eatting, I guess. Something didn't agree with me at lunch and I ended up with diaherra about 2 hours after eating.
Snack: After a somewhat distressing phone call to my youngest brother, I had a couple of slices of sour dough bread with catsup on them. I put some sugar free apple sauce in a large coffee cup, added ground cinnamon{sp} and it was fine. I had a glass of water and skipped the beer I'd initially thought of having and didn't go to the effort of making myself a gin and tonic. The truth is, I don't think I make them very well and so I don't try...

My wife does a much better job with the G and T!

Wednesday, October 04, 2006

04 October 2006

Breakfast: Cream of wheat, two slices of whole wheat toast and coffee.

Lunch: "Chicken Fried Chicken" at Casey's Cowtown: Chicken Fried Chicken with white gravy, mashed potatoes with white gravy, cottage cheese vice the (presumedly) vile Green Beans, a fresh baked roll and some kind of sprad and two glasses of Diet Pepsi.

Snack: About 1/3 cup of the low fat choclate ice cream. (I'll have to put the name in later...)

Dinner: Left over baked chicken and Kathie's Rice Pilof (from the other night) and some broccoli flowers I boiled up this afternoon. Plus, a can of D.P.

Snack: Bag of popcorn...

3 October 2006

Breakfast: Shredded wheat, slice of whole wheat bread with peanut butter, coffee.

Lunch: Burger King salad and a "Diet Coke".

Snack: It was hot out and I got the cravings: I boutht a small container of reduced fat double choclate ice cream and had maybe a 1/3 cup of it...

Dinner: A bag of crackers, Healthy Choice Chicken Broccoli Alfredo Chicken Breast and Broccoli in Alfredo Sauce with Fettuccini Pasta and a can of D.P.

Pre-bedtime snack: Two slices of sour dough bread with no sugar grape jelly and a small coffee cup of White Zin (which tasted too damn sweet)

Monday, October 02, 2006

2 October 2006

Breakfast: At the Hotel at Old Town in Wichita: Kind of liquid scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, pieces of nicely overcooked bacon, coffee, orange juice and water. It was effectively the same breakfast as yesterday.

Lunch: Went to PIzza Hut and had salad and various pizza and a couple of glasses of what might have been Diet Pepsi...

Dinner: Kathie's baked chicken and rice pilof and water.

Sunday, October 01, 2006

1 October 2006

Breakfast: At the Hotel at Old Town in Wichita: Kind of liquid scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, several slices of ham, coffee, orange juice and water.

Snack at Church (the Unity Church of Wichita, Kansas): Half a cup of coffee and a store bought chocolate chip cookie.

Lunch: At Olive Garden in Wichita: Salad, bread sticks, plate of spaghetti and metabolic, then a bowl of angel hair spaghetti (also with meat sauce) and sausage and several (3) glasses of Diet Coke.

Dinner: At the Cessna Sports Stadium in Wichita, waiting for the Rolling Stones Concert: The first two bottles of water cost $400 each. Then, we each had a jerked meat samwich ($600 each) and another couple of bottles of water at $400 each. We were outside and it was hot but we didn't have the money to buy any more water.

They didn't have any water fountains inside!

Well, when we returned to the hotel, I was very thirsty. So, I drank a draft beer (a Fat Tyre) and then a bottle of "MGD" (Miller Genuine Draft) beer. I bought a burritte warmed it in the hotel room microwave and it reminded me (later) of the old adage: "Hunger is the best appetizer!"
