Dear Michael, The Affordable Care Act is bringing additional major health insurance changes for people with diabetes over the next few months, including-finally-the end of discrimination against people with diabetes in the health insurance market. No longer can an insurance company stamp "NO" on an application, simply because you or a family member has diabetes. While these changes will benefit people with diabetes all over the country, we are aware that there is some confusion about how they will benefit you, your friends and your family. That is why, at the American Diabetes Association, we are bringing you information about the Affordable Care Act to help you get insurance that best meets the needs of you and your family. There are two important dates to keep in mind: * On October 1, 2013, people can start signing up for health insurance through their state Marketplace. Coverage purchased in the Marketplace will go into effect as early as January 1, 2014. * January 1, 2014 brings a host of other changes including ending discrimination based on diabetes, ending lifetime dollar limits on benefits, and providing financial help to pay for insurance. We have two new documents to help you understand both Marketplaces and the upcoming changes in health insurance rules related to diabetes. These documents are also available in Spanish. In the Association's new Q&A, "The Health Insurance Marketplace and People with Diabetes", http://main.diabetes.org/site/R?i=-IfSLSsWXbCY6RYwrqLBRw you will find a list of frequently asked questions about the new Health Insurance Marketplace opening in your state on October 1st. If you or anyone you know is uninsured or shopping for new coverage-or simply wants to explore other insurance options-this document will help you learn more about Marketplaces. The American Diabetes Association does not recommend specific health plans, but we want to provide you with an understanding of the new Marketplaces and link you to available resources for assistance. Click HERE to read the Q&A. http://main.diabetes.org/site/R?i=6Mz1E3hSMkp4wv94h0RBsg The American Diabetes Association's new "Health Insurance Update: Protections for People with Diabetes" http://main.diabetes.org/site/R?i=BPGfalTfVu5_mszstGVT3g provides information on changes to health insurance rules which impact people with diabetes, including changes that are already in effect and some starting on the first day of the new year. We want to help you understand these changes and how they can benefit you, your friends and family. Click HERE to read the update. http://main.diabetes.org/site/R?i=7sU-0g7stKghJM5wVV4qDg Making sure that people living with, and at risk for, diabetes can access the care they need for optimal health is at the core of the American Diabetes Association's mission. The new Marketplaces, coupled with the new health insurance rules, will help people with diabetes get the care and treatment they need. Please help spread the word about these changes by forwarding this email to friends and family affected by diabetes. We appreciate your support and everything you do to Stop Diabetes®. Sincerely, Karen D. Talmadge, PhD Chair of the Board, American Diabetes Association P.S. 18 August 2013

_____Breakfast: went to IHOP and had very good food and excellent service. I was quite favourably impressed by this! I had an all meat omlette with three buttermilk pancakes, iced water and coffee.

Snack: some dark chocolate and another cup of coffee

________Lunch: two hot dogs, bottle of Diet Pepsi and a chunk of dark chocolate.
All of the caffine gave me a migrain; it wasn't painful as I took an overdose of pain killer.

_______Dinner:

Pre-Bed Snack:

17 August 2013

_____Breakfast: a breakfast sandwich (at home) and coffee

________Lunch: at a Lions District Cabinet meeting in Dighton where I had a ham/roast beef sandwich, some potatoe salad and desert. I drank some cold water and ice tea.

_______Dinner: At the Italian place at Napoli's Italian Restaurant at the Garden City Kansas airport where I had excellent spaghetti with meat balls and meat sauce and two rolls with butter and two beers. I had Budweiser as this has become my new default beer. It was not something too exotic or "light" or "lite" or that watered down "light" beer called "Ultra". Back in the day before "lite" or "light" beer was invented, there were many excellent beers better than Bud. However, Henry Weinharts was bought out and the quality crapped out and Olympia was bought out and destroyed before many of today's current beer drinkers were ever born!

Pre-Bed Snack: A chunk or two of dark chocolate and cold water (I reached my C2H5OH limit for today at dinner...)

16 August 2013

_____Breakfast: McDonalds breakfast sandwich and coffee
________Lunch: King's Buffet for the usual
_______Dinner: Applebys for a bowl of French Onion soup and Fehitas with chicken and steak and two beers

Dillions does a nice job with cakes. I can not say the same about WalMart's cakes.

10 August 2013

Breakfast: at the Best Western in McPherson Kansas for a mixture of SOS on bisquits, some link sausage, donut, coffee and orange juice

Lunch: We went to the McPherson Montana Mikes and I had a hamburger, fries, 2 glasses of "Diet Pepsi" and some of Kathie's onion rings

There was good service and good food.
We had lunch with a number of other Lions. There were four type 2 diabetics at the table and I was the only one of the four not on insulin and pills! One person has been on insulin for two weeks and fumbled her shot into her right bicep. Another of the type 2s (an RN) couched her through the correct injection. She might have been better off injecting into her belly but she was probably embarrassed by this thought. It would have drawn attention to her being overweight...

Snack: two gin-n-tonics at the Montana Mikes bar. There were 7 Lions around one table drinking and chatting. It was a very socialble and pleasant time.

Dinner: At the Best Western Conference Room and it was a buffet line with very fine tasting food:
  • salad
  • mixed boiled broccoli and carrots
  • mashed potatoes and a fine brown gravy
  • chunks of roast beef
  • rolls and butter at the table
  • apple cobbler desert
  • iced water (they were out of decaf coffee)

About half way through the dinner, I realized that as nice as the food was going down, it would not stay down. About an hour and a half after going to bed, the dinner came back up and I blew chunks. Kathie was also ill.

_____Breakfast: omelet made of four eggs and precooked bacon and coffee

_______Lunch: at the DCCC, a noodle and chicken dish, baked potatoe chunks, a piece of chocolate desert and a glass of "Diet Pepsi"

_______Dinner: at the Boot Hill Casino restaurant for a 16 oz Prime Rib, baked potatoe and I split a chocolate desert with Kathie.

They increased the size of the Prime Rib to one pound but separated the salad bar from the meal and only have one "side" - the baked potatoe. We ordered a "chocolate volcano" [or name to that effect]. This was supposed to come with ice creamme but came with whipped creamme. Our waitress brought a small scoop of vanilla ice creamme.
Pre-Bed Snack: gin-n-tonic

Subject: Out of gas

too cute!!!

The bee said, 'What seems to be the problem?'
'I'm out of gas,' the man replied.

The bee told the man to
wait right there and flew away. Minutes later, the man watched
as an entire swarm of bees flew to his car and into his gas
tank. After a few minutes, the bees flew out.

'Try it now,' said one bee.

The man turned the ignition key and the car started right up. 'Wow!' the man exclaimed, 'what did you put in my gas tank'?

The bee
answered,

Wait

for it, wait for it..

You're

just gonna love this..

I

see you smiling

Dinner: Healthy Choice meatloaf and cold water

Snack: nibbled on some fresh "Boot Hill Museum" fudge and a chunk of dark chocolate

4 August 2013

Breakfast: Wheaties with a banana and coffee

Lunch 1: a half sandwich of cooked steak and coffee

Lunch 2: We went to Montana Mikes and had good food and very nice service; the service approached "top notch".

I had:
  • salad with French Dressing
  • 12 oz "Mountain Momma" sirloin steak
  • baked potatoe
  • a Bud (not a "lite") and water
We were greeted by a waitress in under 30 seconds; very rare in this town.

The drinks came very quickly as did the salad. The main course came a bit too quickly as we were both eating our salads when the steaks came out. Oh, well, it didn't matter when you consider the many, many times we have had to wait long periods between salad and main course.

I think it safe to say the service was shockingly good!

Dinner: I put about a ½ cup of rice in a small pan, added a can of tuna (in water) and boiled it for a while. I mixed in some butter substitute and a hefty squirt of Worcester Sauce and had this will a bottle of LandShark. It was a perfectly adequate meal and if I had any complaints with the waiter (me!), I kept them to myself.
