31 May 2011

Breakfast: cheerios and coffee

Lunch: two beef baloney sandwiches and a "Pepsi Zero" (plus coffee)

Dinner: We went to "King's Buffet", a "Chinese/American" restaurant where I had several chicken dishes, rice, some beef, and both a very little bit of pudding and ice creamme for desert.  At home, I had a couple of gin-n-tonics. At the risk of sounding like a lush, I felt like I needed the first one and didn't turn down the second when my wife offered it to me. Somehow, this reminds me of my Mother mixing "Old Fashioned" for my Father and my disgust at this (back in the late 1980s.) Now, I am becoming my Father in more ways than one and my wife her Mother (and my Mother) in various ways...

I still hope to outlive my Father. He died at age 68; I become 60 in 74 days...

29 May 2011

Breakfast: Jimmy Dean Breakfast Bowls Ham (Eggs, Potatoes, Ham & Cheddar Cheese) and coffee

This was a bit too salty.

Late morning snack (or early lunch?): first, a Jello Mousse Temptations and then  creamme of wheat and coffee

Lunch: we went to the Boot Hill Casino and I had:
  • a very small cup of potatoe, cheese soup (I think it was...)
  • salad
  • their pot roast meal consisting of
  • stewed beef,
  • stewed potatoes
  • stewed carrots
  • and a side dish of corn plus
  • two glasses of "Diet Pepsi"
It was fine but overcooked for my liking. So, I asked my wife to remind me not to have this again for at least six (6) months. I need time to forget my disappointment... :-)

Dinner: A Healthy Choice Meatloaf meal and water. Later, I had a small amount of egg salad on a slice of bread (and gave the rest of the egg salad to my "cleaning service" - my always "hungry-for-human-food" dog...

23 May 2011

Breakfast: wheaties and coffee

Lunch: at Wendy's:
  • a ½ pound hamburger with ketchup and mustard
  • baked potatoe with butter and sour creamme and
  • a medium "Diet Coke"
Dinner: a can of Healthy Choice chicken noodle soup and a bag of CHEEZE-ITs. I forgot my soup yesterday but remembered the peanut butter and grape jelly sandwiches; today, I remembered the soup but left the pb-and-gj safely in the refrigerator...

I'm going to be really hungry by the time I get home around 11:15 pm... :-D

Sunday, May 22, 2011

22 May 2011

Breakfast: left over steak, baked potatoe and roll and coffee

Lunch: we went to the new Italian place and I had
  • rolls and butter
  • spaghetti with meat sauce and meat balls
  • two glasses of "Diet Pepsi"
The place was very crowded and in  spite of this, the service was not too bad...

Dinner: I had planned on Healthy Choice chicken soup and two peanut butter and grape jelly sandwiches. It would have been nice if I'd just remembered to put the can of soup in with the sandwiches, can opener and spoon. So, I guess it's two sandwiches...

Saturday, May 21, 2011

21 May 2011

Breakfast: pancakes and link sausage (cooked on Kathie's much loved fancy grill) and coffee

Lunch: Kathie's "Mexican", which is:
  • a 10" soft taco shell with
  • "Mexican seasoned" hamburger
  • mashed re-fried beans
  • shredded yellow cheese
  • and after warming this through in the microwave, I added
  • sour creamme and
  • shredded lettuce.
I had two of these and washed them down with a bottle of Diet Coke. I would have preferred Diet Pepsi but Hastings "only carries Coke products" and we had stopped there for me to check out the new book collection. They had, in hard back, the third book in a John Ringo trilogy. I've got the first two books (also in hard back) in my living room and plan to start reading them in a week or two. Actually, I'm thinking of the 26th...

Dinner: a Healthy Choice meatloaf dinner, iced water and six little Oreos for desert

20 May 2011

Breakfast: cheerios and coffee

Lunch: the left over steak and pototoe from last night. It was quite good and I wish I'd left myself more... :-)

Snack: first, some ice creamme at the mall and then corns chips, cheese dip and a medium "Diet Pepsi" at the movie...

Dinner: We went to Montana Mike's and I had:
  • salad with French dressing
  • most of as 16 oz steak
  • most of the baked potatoe
  • nearly all of a roll with butter
The waiter brought us the bill when we were done eating but did not ask us if we wanted desert. I wonder if waiters/waitresses are being trained these day to not ask if patrons want desert? We would have said "no" but that is besides the point. We might have said "yes" and that would have lead to more sales for the restaurant and a bigger tip for our waiter...

20 May 2011

Breakfast: cherios and coffee

Lunch: the left over steak and pototoe from last night. It was quite good and I wish I'd left myself more... :-)

19 May 2011

Breakfast: wheaties and coffee

Lunch: a peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich and bag of cheez-its and water

Dinner: We went to Applebys and I ordered:
  • "French" onion soup
  • 12 oz steak (ate about ¼ of it)
  • large baked potatoe (ate about ½ of it)
  • mixed veggies (ate most of them)
  • iced water...
I simply was not hungry. The food was good and I took it home with me with the intent to have it for lunch the next day. I simply ran out of appetite. Then, several hours later, after going to bed early,  I realized I was waking up because I was hungry. I told myself that if I wasn't hungry enough to eat at 6 pm, I certainly wasn't going to eat at midnight...

The next morning, I had my best blood sugar reading in years: 122. (This is the "normal" value I am supposed to be getting all the time. :-[  )

So, now I know how to get morning blood sugar readings. I simply have to starve myself the night before and wake up feeling hungry several times at night. I'm not sure how long I could maintain such a regimen. It does remind me of how Kathie and I lost so much weight the first year we were married. We were simply hungry all the time. That is why we left Overeater's Anonymous in late 1980 and have never gone back...

Cinco de Mayo 2011

Breakfast: cheerios and coffee plus peanut butter and grape jelly on a slice of sour dough bread (some of which my dog begged from me...)

Lunch: There is a new Italian place, Napoli's. I had:
  • garlic bread with butter
  • spaghetti with meat sauce and a side order of meat balls
  • "Diet Pepsi" from the tap
Given our waiter was on his first day of waiting, the service was fine. The food was excellent. We arrived at 11:40 am and barely found a parking spot. There were two tables open when we arrived. When we left, there were folks waiting for a table and the parking low was full. It is always good to see a fine new place open. It looks like "Bella Italia" is going to have some serious competition!

Dinner: Marie Callender's Beef and Broccoli (Sliced Beef with Rice & Broccoli in a Savory Sauce) and iced water

3 May 2011

Breakfast: home made spaghetti consisting of:
  • left over noodles
  • two hot dogs
  • about ½ a can of tomatoe sauce
  • coffee
I'll have to see if the milk I left at work is still good and still in the office refrigerator...

Lunch: we went to Burger King and I had
  • a ½ pound
  • fries
  • a  medium "Diet Pepsi"
Dinner:  a Healthy Choice Sweet & Tangy Chicken BBQ (Chicken Tenderloins in BBQ Sauce, Sweet Corn Blend, Red Skin Potatoes & Caramel Apple Multigrain Crisp) and water

I was feeling ill yesterday and visited my family MD this morning. He gave me some meds for a bladder infection. . My A1C was 8.1 so Dr. H doubled my Actos  from 15 mg to 30 mg and had me buy a 90 day prescription of this stuff. Given that 30 mg tabs of Actos seems to be much more expensive than Lizard Spit, it looks like I've lost this battle and will be "on the needle" in early August. I hope this note doesn't sound to whiny or too "Drama Queen" or too over the top. The "Drama Queen" is what Kathie called me the last time I got all "over the top" (to use Dr. H's phrase) about going "on the needle".

OK, it just means the battle (control of my A1C) has not been lost; I just need to change my battle tactics...

Regardless, it may be the infection or doubling the Actos but I feel awful.

P.S.:  I was thinking I was running a bit of a fever and was thinking of leaving work early tonight. Fortunately, they had an office party this noon so I ate some (about a third of a cup to a half of a cup) of ice creamme and dark chocolate and immediately felt better. Hummm, so this is what a touch of low sugar might feel like to me? Maybe it just meant the cold ice creamme cooled me off?

Monday, May 02, 2011

2 Mai 2011

Breakfast: the rest of last night's ham, a fried/scrambled egg, some fried mashed potatoes and coffee

Lunch: at KFC where I had
  • extra crispy chicken
  • corn
  • mashed potatoes with brown gravy
  • chocolate pudding and apple crisp and
  • a glass of "Diet Pepsi"
They got their money's worth from us. I was feeling ill and could not eat much...

Dinner: A Healthy Choice meatloaf (meatloaf, mashed potatoes with  brown gravy, corn and apple crisp) and iced water

May Day 2011

Breakfast: at the hotel, same food as yesterday

Lunch: We went to a streak buffet (I've forgotten the name) and I had some roast beef (didn't like it so Kathie ate it), a steak mashed potatoes and brown gravy and a  brownie with vinellia ice creamme and chocolate syrup. Also, a couple of glasses of "Diet Pepsi". The service wasn't too good but then it was very busy...

Dinner: a slab of ham and pre-made mashed potatoes with margarine

30 April 2011

Breakfast: typical buffet breakfast  at the Hyatt (eggs, croissant, potatoes, orange juice, coffee, etc.)

Lunch: at the World War 1 Museum, I had "French Dip" (no Swiss cheese), "French" dip and a Diet Pepsi.

Dinner: at an Italian place near the Hyatt for
  • salad,
  • spaghetti with meatballs and meat sauce
  • and two glasses of some drought beer.

Snack: I split an oil can of Foster's with Kathie.

It was "Prom Season" so we had to eat dinner (evening meal) in a bar, not the restaurant and we were told that if we wanted to go to the rotating lounge, drink and watch the city "move around", we would have to put our names on a waiting list. We're not interesting in being held hostage by high school Prom kids and we went to our room...

29 April 2011

Breakfast: the last two slices of
  • my homemade egg,
  • cheese,
  • ham quiche
  • and  coffee

Lunch: at Brahms,
  • a fancy hamburger with Swiss cheese,
  • ham and
  • some kind of sauce,
  • fries and
  • a chocolate milk shake
Dinner: in Kansas City Mo, at the German restaurant for
  •  salad,
  • roast beef,
  • stewed red cabbage,
  • mashed potatoes,
  • a roll,
  • two glasses of a fancy Australian beer
  • and a chocolate desert.
The food was excellent, the service quite good and the cost about equal to the last three (3) times we went out to dinner in Dodge City. I mean it was very expensive!

Then, we went to the Hyatt's rotating lounge and I had two strawberry drinks. In keeping with the trend started with dinner, this was the highest bar bill I've ever had! My two drinks, Kathie's two red wines and the price was about $43!  Ouch Ouch Ouch

Thursday, April 28, 2011

28 April 2011

Breakfast: home made quiche and coffee

Snack: two chocolate chip cookies

Lunch: a mix of boiled (old) broccoli, a boiled potatoe and cubed ham and a bottle of Diet Pepsi.

Once again, proof I don't understand this diabetes. I would have thought the choc shake at lunch would have jacked it but I would probably have been wrong.

Easter 2011

Breakfast: spoon sized shredded wheat and coffee

Snack: peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and coffee

Lunch:  Kathie had a craving for lobster tails so we went to the Casino Restaurant. There, we discovered they were running an Easter Brunch. So, of course, we tried it!  The price was $12.99, which was less than the lobster tails and less than the steak I had been thinking of getting. So, I had:
  • omelet with
    • sauteed onions,
    • ham,
    • bacon,
    • cheddar cheese
  • two slices of ham
  • scalloped potatoes
  • roast beef wrapped around some filler (the beef was fine, the filler not; Kathie didn't like the filler either)
  • a Mombasa (orange juice and champagne)
  • Strawberry dakeria
Kathie was the "designated driver" and I was the "designated drinker" (for a change!)

Dinner: Healthy choice meatloaf and water then, some cottage cheese with grape jelly. This looks bad but is really quite nice. It reminds me of the cottage cheese and homemade (Grandma Maxson made) strawberry jam that Grandpa Maxson and I enjoyed.

Easter 2011

Breakfast: spoon sized shredded wheat and coffee

Snack: peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and coffee

Lunch:  to be determined

23 April 2011

Breakfast: wheaties and coffee

Lunch: Ramon noodles with a can of chicken added and to drink, a cup of coffee

Snack: small bag of popcorn

Dinner: at Applebys,
  • cup of "French" onion soup
  • fajitas with steak and chicken
  • sour creamme and cheese
  • iced water
Although it took several minutes for "our" waiter to show up, he was quite adequate. I did have to hold up my water glass to get a refill. In this waiter's defense, we came in just before a crowd of hungry people and the "wait staff" got fairly busy...

21 April 2011

Breakfast: At Burger King, their SOS but I didn't finish the potatoe thingies. I took them home.

Lunch: We went to Pizza Hutt and I had a slice of meat pizza, a slice of apple pie pizza, salad and vinalli pudding and two glasses of "Diet Pepsi"

Dinner: I was feeling sick to my stomach so I had milk toast, then the left over baked potatoe from the day before and a bottle of MGD.

on "worried feet" in restaurnt or service in Dodge

Anthony Bourdain wrote that good restaurant managers "must have worried feet". That is, the owner/manager must walk around their restaurant asking customers how their meal is going:
  • how is the service,
  • how is the food,
  • do you have any complaints?
I saw an interview of the Head Chef of a famous restaurant (in Los Vagus, I think). He said he wanted to know if the customer was happy. If the customer was unhappy, that customer could tell a dozen other people about the bad service, bad food, bad booze, etc. and tear down his reputation. So, if there was a problem, he (the restaurant owner/manager/head chef) wanted to "make it right" (to use a phrase I hear on CSI).

This owner had a waiter who really shafted a customer with bad service, cold food, brought out the wrong drink and "as a courtesy" put in a large tip for himself (as I recall). The Head Chef found out about it. He gave the disappointed guests free meals, free fancy desert and apologized. He shit canned fired the offending waiter. These guests had been on their way to a business convention where they could have ruined the restaurant's reputation in front of hundreds...

These places in town have different level of manager's "worried feet". They are:
  • Mariah Hills Restaurant.  The manager (Ham) has very worried feet. He is always taking meals out or oberving or visiting with his customers. His food is a bit expensive but the food is excellent and the service quite good.
  • Casey's Cowtown. The owner, Mike Casey, has worried feet. His food is excellent but the service is spotty. None the less, Mike likes to visit witih his customers.
  • Appleby: The duty manager has not been displaying "worried feet" very much lately. The service is occasionally spotty but the food good.
  • Montana Mikes: The duty manager has not been displaying "worried feet" much lately and the service is occasionally spotty. The food is very good but they seem to miss parts of the desert "Mudslide" quite often.
  • Boot Hill Casino Restaurant. The last couple of times we where there, we never saw a manager, which means the manager did not have worried feet. He should have; the service was poor although the food fairly good.  It really pisses off customers when you wait 5 minutes to 10 minutes before asking a distant waitress to have "your" waitress/waiter come take your order...
  • Kate's.  We've been there twice and the food good but the service basically non-existent. The waitress is probably vastly overworked as there appear to be maybe two waitress when they probably needed four or five. The waitress took our order and dropped off the bill. They don't seem to come around to issue refills. It may be more propoer to say the waitress appears to wait on frequent customers and new customers are ignored; this is the only way I can explain comments heard from a couple of frequent customres who claimed to have received good service.
  • Finally, the place with the worst service I've had in years. This was the "Mexican Place" at the local Mall. Now, maybe they had a busy day, maybe the waitress was having a bad day and maybe the quality of the service just sucked. I don't know since we haven't been back since 18 December 2010 and don't plan on visiting anytime soon. There are simply too many other places in town with food of compariable value and better service. Money is too tight to spend on a place expecting bad service.
I've a friend who thinks the real problem is that "wait staff" has not been properly trained. That is probably true as the service at new places is often good and then decays with time.

20 April 2011

Breakfast: a ham and cheese sandwich on sour dough bread, with the sandwich fried and a cup of coffee

Lunch: at Casey's Cowtown:
  • large hamburger
  • large fries
  • glass of iced waer
  • desert was a small chocolate milk shake at McDonald's (I should not have but I had an incredible craving for something sweet...)
Dinner: Kathie made:
  • ruben
  • creamme of potatoe soup with chunks of ham added
  • gin-n-tonic

19 April 2011

Breakfast: cheerios and coffee

Lunch: I finished this note on the 20th and I can't remember what I had for lunch...

Dinner: We went to the Boot Hill Casino for dinner and had:
  • salad
  • small cup of noddle and chicken soup
  • large steak (I took about 40% of it home)
  • large "loaded" baked potatoe (which I took most of home)
  • two rolls with butter and
  • split a slice of chocolate cake with my wife
The service was very poor. We were seated and began waiting for a waitress. After about 6 minutes of seeing other "wait staff" in the distance, I suggested to Kathie that we wait for 15 minutes and then leave. I had planned on that 15 minute wait before I went looking for a manager. If I could not get the restaurant manager, I was going to ask to speak with the Casino's duty manager. However, Kathie lost her patience and yelled at a waitress some 15 feet away: "is there a waitress for this table"? This waitress offered to send "our" waitress over. Several minutes later, an eager looking young woman came over, introduced herself and asked what we wanted.

This restaurant has a salad/soup bar and we served ourselves. We wee about done with the salads when "our" waitress brought over rolls and butter. That mollified us a bit and we started feeling better about "our" waitress. Dinner came out and was fine. I ordered a desert ("Death by Chocolate" or chocolate cake with fudge drizzled on it.)

Then, we began waiting for the desert.

I can see it taking 10-15 minutes for a steak to be prepared but to wait about 10 minutes for a simple slice of cake seems excessive.

The food was fine and I hate to admit it but the desert was worth the wait. I will admit "our" waitress came around a couple of times during the meal and refilled our water glasses quickly. Kathie had a glass of red wine and "our" waitress did not ask if she wanted a refill...

In one of his books, Anthony Bourdain wrote that a "restaurant owner must have worried feet" [or words to that effect]. The owner must be walking around asking his guests how the meal is going and if they are pleased. The duty manager of the Boot Hill Casino restaurant was not doing this.

He should have been!

18 April 2011

Breakfast: wheaties and coffee

Lunch: the leftover pizza from last night and a "Pepsi ONE"; I'll have to get a can or two of Diet Pepsi to bring to work for lunch.

Dinner: a Healthy Choice meatloaf dinner and water

Monday, April 18, 2011

17 April 2011

Breakfast: I left the milk home so that meant there was no point in eating my wheaties. (I'll have them tomorrow.) Instead, I had left over chopped ham (which I had brought with yesterday's lunch) and a bag of Cheeze-Its. I drank coffee with this repast.

Lunch: This was leftovers from yesterday's lunch:
  • the rest of the meatloaf
  • the rest of the boiled white rice
  • the rest of the boiled broccoli and
  • a bottle of Diet Pepsi...
Snack: We went to an excellent movie ("Source Code") and had popcorn and "Diet Pepsi" there. "Source Code" was the finest movie, in all ways, that I've seen in years!

Dinner: We had homemade pizza. I put chopped
  • sharp cheddar
  • Parmesan cheese from the block and
  • a couple of "Baby Bel" cheese "disks"
on my pizza. I had a Michelob Lager and then a gin-n-tonic.

The gin-n-tonic was a big mistake, especially since I drank it less than 2 hours before going to bed. The mistake was it filled my stomach too much after putting a heavy doughy meal (homemade pizza) in it and my stomach simply doesn't empty the way it used to. I ended up barfing about two hours after going to bed.

The diabetes is messing up my digestion and eating the wrong combination of food and drink certainly does not help!

16 April 2011

Breakfast: oatmeal and coffee

Lunch: a fine traditional lunch of
  • homemade meatloaf (too much oatmeal)
  • boiled rice
  • boiled broccoli florets (I'm still working my way thru the bag of broccoli florets I bought at Sam's about 3 weeks ago!)
  • coffee and
  • iced water
Dinner: I could not face another Healthy Choice meal so I went with:
  • two nice little steaks fried in my 10" cast iron fry pan,
  • frozen hash browns fried in my 10" cast iron fry pan
  • with unfortunately, bottled brown gravy. I should have let the steak juices and ketchup do the flavouring for the potatoes and
  • a bottle of Michelob Lager (not the Mic Light and certainly not Mic Ultra, which I think is always filtered thru someone's kidneys...)
  • desert was the last of the "no sugar, no fat" cooked chocolate pudding from yesterday
I had a bit of trouble cleaning the fry pan. Before I started cooking, I boiled some water in it to remove any unwanted grease and kill anything growing in the pan (I'm paranoid about such contamination). I saw what appeared to be several rust streaks and that both upset me and offended me! There wasn't much I could do at that time, though.  I fried the steak first and then the potatoes. After cooking dinner, I had fried potatoes stuck to the bottom of the pan (and I had used a lot of olive oil). Fortunately, I boiled a bit more water in the pan and was able to scrap the potatoes out with a steel spatula. Then, I rinsed the fry pan out, dried it and coated it with a thick layer of olive oil. After which, I wrapped it in a couple of towels and put the pan back in the pots and pans drawer of the oven. (The next time I use this fry pan, I'm sure I'll worry about germs growing in the olive oil... :-[  )

12 April 2011

Breakfast: leftover chicken (way too much garlic in it) and some bread stuffing (my dog demonstrated his magnificent ability to whine and occasionally utter a threatening bark as he "fought" for "his share" of my breakfast...

Lunch: We went to "Bella Italinia" {sp} for
  • a fancy garlic bread dipped in olive oil
  • white bread with butter to dip in the sauce of
  • beef, cheese lasagna
  • and two glasses of "Diet Pepsi, no ice..."
Dinner: first, an over ripe banana (still good) and then a Healthy Choice Classic Meat Loaf (Meat Loaf with Rich Brown Gravy, Mashed Potatoes, Sweet Corn Blend & Apple Cranberry Multigrain Crisp) and cool water  Desert was a second ripe banana.

I used to make meatloaf quite a bit. I think I should take my favourite fry pan, whip it out good and use it to bake some meatloaf. I'll make it about ½ good hamburger and ½ oatmeal with sauteed chopped onions and garlic. Maybe I'll rehash something popular in Navy meatloaf and put in finely chopped green peppers. I hated them in the early 1970s and picked them out; now, I think I'll just "trust the chef" and eat the silly things...

11 April 2011

Breakfast: milk toast made with sour dough bread and coffee

Lunch: chicken fingers and fries at Arbys plus "Diet Coke"

Snack: small amount of ice creamme with chocolate topping (I was starting to get my appetite back...)

 Dinner: a mixture of
  • boiled broccoli florets,
  • two hot dogs,
  • two ripe bananas and
  • iced water (supposedly ice cold drinks screw up digestion enzymes but the office water tastes putrid sans ice)
Snack: small amount of peanuts...

nice comments

10 April 2011

Breakfast: We went to the Boot Hill Casino for breakfast. I had:
  • a waffle with whipped butter and zero sugar syrup
  • a small amount of bacon
  • SOS over hash brown potatoes

Lunch: Kathie made
  • baked chicken with
  • bread stuffing and
  • boiled broccoli florets preceding this
The one nice thing about being sick the day before is my appetite is suppressed and I didn't eat all my meal. Now, if this suppression (and vague feelings of nausea when eating) were to remain, I might finally lose some weight!

Dinner: Marie Cal lender's Beef Pot Pie (Tender Beef) and water

The food was fine but it took a long time to eat; I am still "off my feed". My stomach was upset after eating so I guess my poor dog won't get a treat tonight (his "share" of my midnight snack :-D   )

Post Note: I got home about 11:15 pm, walked the dog, took a couple of pain pills and Musinex {sp}, then went to bed. Everything came back up about an hour and a half later. The upside is my blood sugar the morning of the 11th was the best it's been in a long while: 119. So is that the secret to low blood sugar? Eat very little with dinner and don't let it stay down?

I would rather not be sick and have to worry about the blood sugar level than to be sick and wonder how long I'll be sick...

9 April 2011 (updated...)

Breakfast: Kathie's big breakfast of:
  • scrambled eggs,
  • well cooked bacon,
  • Serri Lee coffee cake and
  • coffee
It was quite nice.

Lunch: We had
  • 2 hot dogs in buns
  • cottage cheese and
  • potatoe chips and
  • cold water
Dinner: I had a small Wendy's chocolate frostie. This is not the kind of thing a diabetic should have but I fear it was about all that I could have kept down. I started feeling sick shortly after I left the house to drive to work.

I went into a hardware store to buy some red onion bulbs for our garden. The clerk did not know how much to price the bulbs. I spoke my math out loud and convinced her that my 6 little bulbs would be 6¼¢. She could not enter this figure on her register and entered 6¢. The machine definitely added state/county/city sales tax and I have to fork over 8¢. Such a high price  :-D and I do hope this does my part in curing the state's budget deficit!

I went to work and was feeling worst. My pay forms were "locked in stone" on Wednesday and so it would be very hard to change the work schedule to let me take sick leave. I barfed twice in the early evening (or I should say I barfed multiple times at two different periods tonight.) I thought about the left over steak and baked potatoe from this past Tuesday (or Thursday?) and realized that I could never keep it down. I had boiled broccoli before leaving home but the small amount of olive oil and "butter" I'd mixed with the boiling water would probably resulted in the meal coming back up.

One of my co-workers was asking another fellow if he'd like something from Wendy's? I asked the guy on the phone to have Fred, the man calling, bring me a small chocolate Wendy's frostie. Fred brought it and it not only went down well but has stayed down... :-)

I'm trying to figure out what whacked me so hard. It just isn't normal for me to start barfing in the middle of the afternoon. (One to two hours after going to bed is far more normal). So, it could have been:
  • heat stroke as I felt better when I went inside at the Hardware Store. But, I didn't feel better when I went inside at work. I was thirsty but feared that I'd barf if I drank water. I drank a small amount of water and felt better until I barfed it up...
  • hypoglycemia: I am a type 2 and simply don't get low blood sugar. However, the Wendy's frozen desert has sugar and after eating 3 or 4 spoon fulls, I felt much, much better. Maybe it was the hypoglycemia?
  • It could have food poisoning. I may not have rinsed the fry pan off good enough and will really rinse it good before we use it next! (I don't give a shit if you aren't supposed to immerse it!)

After I got home, I disappointed my dog by not eating anything. I went to bed and was worried that I wouldn't keep my pre-bedtime glass of water down. I kept having trouble breathing so I finally took a Musinex {sp} for that. I should have taken a couple of (anti)-pain pills as I kept tossing and turning. I finally took a couple and actually slept from around 3:30 am - 4 am till 8 am.

Sunday night, I am going to take that Musinex and the two (anti)-pain pills. They probably won't be necessary but it won't hurt...

8 April 2011

Breakfast: I made a form of home made quiche out of
  • a baked pie pan,
  • about 6 oz cooked ham sliced and sprinkled on the pan bottom
  • 4 eggs mixed with a big shot of 2% milk
  • sharp cheddar cheese spread on the pan bottom with the ham and
  • uncooked frozen hash browns spread on the top of the egg mixture.
I cooked this for about 30 minutes, removed it from the oven, let is cool and took it to work.

Lunch: the rest of the breakfast quiche and cold coffee

Dinner: since we expected the "R"s to shut down the government, we decided to splurge and have one more night on the town before we went into Mike_the_government_worker_reports_to_work_as_usual_and_gets_paid "in the sweet by an by".  We went to Mariahah Hills, (aka "Ham's" place). We had quite a wait in the bar before we got seated. We wanted to go here since they have the best steaks in Dodge City and I like the view (Kathie thinks Casey's Cowtown has a better atmosphere but I know when to change a subject and so I did...)

I had:
  • salad with Thousand Island Dressing
  • large fillet with "Ham's sauce" (the waitress offered us a steak sauce and I replied that it would be a sacrilege to put such a think on one of "Ham's fillet". She said a lot of people tell her that...
  • large baked potatoe with sour creamme and butter
  • roll with butter
and certainly no desert! My steak was one of the best I've had in years and Kathie's lobster tail equally good!

I've read that if you eat slowly, your meal will fill you up and what I has tonight certainly did. We then did some shopping (Mr. G's Liquor and the 14th Street Dillions). I waited till 2 hours past "fork down time" to test my blood sugar. I recall it was 143, which is fine for me! Then, some gin-n-tonic and we watched the season finale of "Merlin". It is amazing how Merlin (AKA Emers) can keep fooling folks he is around so often. i.e. Arthur and Gwen. They finally revealed that Gaius, the step-father of Merlin, is also a wizard!

I am so looking forward to next season...

7 April 2011

Breakfast: oatmeal and coffee

Lunch: egg salad sandwich, bag of chips and water

Dinner: Healthy Choice chopped roast beef with mashed potatoes, brown gravy, carrots and apple crisp

We had two Healthy Choice meals left (chopped roast beef and meatloaf) and we both like the "meatloaf" meal. So, I put one in each hand, held them behind my back and asked her to pick. She picked the hand with the chopped roast beef and looked upset. So, I asked her "would you like the meatloaf?" "Yes", was her answer so I gave her the meatloaf meal. I wanted it too but I wanted her to be happy more than I wanted that meatloaf...

6 April 2011

Breakfast: wheaties and coffee

Lunch: at Casey's Cowtown, a steak salad with sauteed onions and a small bowl of cottage and cold water

Snack: banna split with only chocolate syrup at Dairy Queen...

Dinner: at Montana Mike's:
  • salad with French Dressing,
  • roll with butter,
  • most of a nice steak (took the rest home)
  • most of a baked potatoe (took the rest home),
  • no desert (they lacked some of the ingredients for the "Mudslide") and
  • glass of iced water...

  • scrambled eggs
  • sausage patty
  • potatoe slab
  • biscuit with "butter" and grape jelly
  • coffee

3 April 2011

Breakfast: at the Pancake house for
  • SOS over hash brown potatoes
  • some bacon
  • a bisquit with grape jelly and
  • coffee
The service was poor because this restaurant was quite crowded. None the less, since we were two of many who took the buffet, the two waitress should have had time to come around with coffee a lot more than they did!

My wife felt sorry for "our" waitress and over tipped her. For the "gift" of coffee, I thought a $2 tip was fine; she insisted on giving "our" waitress $3.

I'm not normally tight with tips. If we had ordered off the menu, I would have been willing to tip higher; if we'd gotten coffee refills without me having to wave my hand and finally, wave my coffee cup (which is rude, I admit), I would not have minded a $3 tip (or even higher). :-(

Lunch:  at El Zarpatia, the "new" Mexican place. I recently bad mouthed them based on their being busy and crowded during a buffet on Tuesday. Today, we ordered off the menu and
  • the food was much better,
  • the service was much better (especially when compared with breakfast) and
  • our waitress topped off our drinks before they were empty.
So, I recommend this place and repent my earlier bad recommendation.  I had:
  • their Supreme meal and
  • the free order of desert and
  • Diet Coke
Dinner: A Healthy Choice meatloaf meal and water

Snack: a co-worker brought in a tamalis and they were quite nice.

garden (the beginning)

We rented a 15 by 20 foot plot to garden on. After about 15 minutes of
hoeing, we realized this wasn't working. Fortunately, a friend of ours
was watering his plot near us, came over to visit and suggested we have
our plot roto-tilled. We went to the garden shop we rented the plot from
and got the name of a fellow "farmer" who also did roto-tilling. We gave
him $10 and he said he would till our plot today.

We're going out tomorrow to plant the broccoli, radish, carrot seeds. We
can't plant the watermelons until mid-May. We going to buy and plant
tomatoes in late May. I'm thinking of seeing if I can still buy potato
"starts" and broccoli "starts" and plant them tomorrow.

I'll have to post pictures as the garden progresses to my photo blog and
facebook page.

April Fool's Day 2011

Breakfast: spoon sized shredded wheat (my dog liked "his" share) and coffee (which my dog won't touch... :-D )

Lunch: at Wendy's for a
  • ½ pound hamburger with bacon
  • baked potatoe with butter and chives
  • medium "Diet Coke"
Snack: some ice creamme...

Dinner: this was meant to be a science experiment at seeing if I could get a low blood sugar reading; it failed as I "scored" 230 from:
  • 1.5 small pieces of pork chop (about ½ pound of pork chops)
  • two small potatoes, boiled
  • a bunch of broccoli florets and
  • iced water
Snack: a couple of saltine crackers

Thursday, March 31, 2011

31 March 2011

Breakfast: a fried egg and two slices of sour dough toast and coffee

Lunch: from King's Buffet, a mixture of chicken and beef and pork, rice and desert and two glasses of "Diet Pepsi"

Dinner: Unlike a week or so ago, I did not destroy the pork and I had:
  • pork chops, fried and baked,
  • boiled rice,
  • boiled broccoli and
  • cold water

30 March 2011

Breakfast: cherios and coffee

Lunch: at Casey's Cowtown for
  • a salad with French dressing,
  • "chicken fingers",
  • large order of French Fries,

I was feeling a bit ill when when went to dinner but I felt better after eating. Then, about 3 hours or so after dinner, dinner came back up; an hour after going to bed in other words. ("It tasted so good going down, not so good coming back up." paraphrase of Vir Coto). I'll have to wash the foot rug in front of the toilette...

13 March 2011

Breakfast: cheerios and coffee

Snack: I took a can of canned chicken and sampled it. It was worst than bland; it tasted awful (albeit not rotted). I poured Worcestershire Sauce over it, let it soak and it tasted much better. I emptied the chicken into a plastic bowl and spooned some into a paper bowl and put mustard on it. The mustard and  sauce  really gave this chicken flavour...

Lunch: A really nice lunch of:
  • rib eye steak
  • baked potatoe
  • boiled asparagus
  • cold water
Snack: I went to the local gas station and made a house payment for some oil well owner (not quite that bad!) and bought an ice creamme bar of a type that I've not seen in decades. The train blocked 14th Street south and this gave me time to eat my snack...

Snack #2: We watched the last several episodes of the 1943 "Batman" movie serial. It wasn't too bad and was period correct in the way the white folks hated "the Japs". I made popcorn for Kathie and me.

Dinner: a Healthy Choice "meatloaf" and water...

12 March 2011

Breakfast: I made an attempt at a Jimmy Dean potatoe, sausage, egg, cheese mix and not a very good attempt...
  • two medium potatoes chopped up, covered with "Italian Seasoning" and olive oil and baked at 400º
  • chopped up Gouda cheese put on top of the potatoes about 10 minutes into the cooking
  • three eggs scrambled with a shot of milk and poured over the potatoes then
  • cooked for another 20 - 25 minutes
I drank some coffee with this...

Snack: some little Oreos. Tomorrow, I'll bring fruit or veggies as a snack.

Lunch: homemade pizza with hamburger, Gouda cheese, Tillamook sharp cheddar and water

Snack: at the movie, some popcorn and "Diet Pepsi"

Dinner: From Sonic,
  • a hot dog with sour krat and sauteed onions,
  • large order of fries
  • and refrigerator cold water
This was fine but it didn't have enough onions and I had trouble finding the sour krat. Next time, I'll cook a ¼ hot dog with the sauteed onions right next to the "dog" and enough sour krat as to practically hide the "dog"!
