history of beer

This link is for those of us who like to sip good beer and not just chugg it like a bunch of college Freshmen or junior enlisted. I din't drink before I enlisted in the US Navy in 1970; in fact I couldn't stand the flavoiur of beer. But, after "A" school, I quickly learned that having a social life meant learning to drink beer...

Oh, well...

22 December 2006

Let me tell you about the jobs involved in the colon check. This is meant as a way to see if one has blood (I guess) in one's stools. The VA clinic MD told me to do this on 30 November 2006 and I put it off because it is (to be blunt) a shitty -er- nasty task.

You start by eatting veggie for two days and eatting only small amounts of "well cooked chicken, tuna or turkey". No red meat or certain veggies allowed. I was strongly encourage to eat a lot of ruffage! A whole lot!

After the joys of this "bulking up", I then had to collect a "sample" of the output (feces) on a piece of toilet paper and smear it on a sample card. The card was then closed and when all three were "filled out" (in a manner of speaking), I put this stuff in the pre-stamped envelope and mailed it. The outside was clean yet I couldn't get my wife to carry it into the Post Office to mail it. (Why not? She had to go inside and mail a package anyway???)

It was every bit as disguesting as it sounds. When I put the third sample in today, the lid on an earlier sample opened. It was a good thing I hadn't eatten breakfast yet because I think I would have vomited...

Dried, rotting feces...

It really was nasty...

Breakfast: Aunt Jemima pancakes and sausage, a cup of coffee and a can of D.P.

Lunch: An Arby's "French Dip" samwich and a medium "Diet Pepsi".

Pre-dinner snack: Several slices of sausage and "yellow" cheese and crackers at work. They were put out as part of the Chritsmas spirit rising thing...
I ate a large "slice" (credit card sized) of dark choclate and of couse, drank a can of D.P. with this. When I jump off the wagon, I take off with both feet; ain't no stepping out on one foot for me!

Dinner: (Veggie again): Boiled broccoli flowers, cabbage and carrots, plus a couple of handfuls of unsalted peanuts and a somewhat ripe bananna. I drank water with dinner...

Eating blandly...

My youngest brother has had severe stomach problems nearly all of 2006. His MD has him on a very bland diet of things like mashed potatoes. While this is a bad idea from the viewpoint that potatoes "flash" to blood sugar very quickly, it is something that can be digested before his stomach "rejects" it.

We hope his MDs can cure him before the excess blood sugar does irreparable damage to his kidneys and eyes (the damage has already been done to his heart and his legs. He is 14 years younger than me but he is on track to die years before I do...).

There are times we all dispair about him!

Breakfast: Left over baked chicken, rice pilof and coffee and a can of D.Pl

Lunch: At Wendy's a "plain" double hamberger, baked potatoe with butter and chives and a glass of "Diet Pepsi". They screwed up the order by putting some kind of cheesey spread between the two meat paddies; I scraped off as much as I could and ate it separately.

Dinner: A large salad with a glass of water and a bottle of Mic. After reading the latest bad news about my youngest brother, I did something stupid and had a gin and tonic.

I suppose we could have had Hawaiin food to commenerate yesterday being the 65th anniversary of the "
Day That Will Live In Infamy!"

06 December 2006

I was disappointed in this meal.

Years ago, I ate this several times a week and only quite when I could afford better. I bought a couple of these this afternoon because I was going into work after Lions and didn't dare take a frozen "real meal" (i.e. a "Healthy Choice"). I was captivated by the appearance of the "Meatloaf" on the box. It looked like textured hamburger, like something my Grandmother would have made. It didn't have all that "green crap" that NavMeatloafaf was so loaded with. The instructions said "to break the plastic seal before heating in the microwave". I used a spoon to puncture said "plastic seal" and licked the spoon off.

That was a mistake as I immediately began to wonder if I'd made a mistake in picking this meal…

One half was clearly mashed potatoes with some gravy, the other half a smooth brownish substance. It didn't have the granulated surface I associate with meat loaf!

There was something distrubingly familiar about it.

I cut into the "meatloaf" and it looked like the "wet dog food" we fed our dog ("Ozzie") about 20 years ago. It looked like a frigging piece of "doggie food"!

I'm fond of the expression "Hunger is the best appitizer." Well, I'd eatten lunch about 6 hours before and was getting hungry. Still, I wasn't quite hungry enough to tackle a second helping of this "meatloaf". I'll have left over "no sugar added" applesauce when I get home. (I just hope tonight won't be one I spend "steering the porciline bus" a couple of hours after racking out!)

After I got home from work, I read the latest email from one brother about another brother of ours. Being hungry, I toasted a thick slice of sour dough bread in the oven and had a double gin and tonic. I was thinking of my brother, his problems and the arguemnts to come on the subject "do we pay his rent again this month because he can't get/hold a job or do we accept the guilt of him being homeless? A stiff drink was probably not the best solution but it surely killed the emotions involved...

Tuesday, December 05, 2006

05 December 2006

Breakfast: Aunt Jemima Pancakes & Sausage and a can of D.P. (plus my second or third cup of coffee.)

Lunch: Wendy's double hamburger plain (but they put "cheese" on it anyway...), a baked potatoe with sour cream and chives and butter-substitute and a glass of "Diet Pepsi".

Dinner: A large salad, with "low-cal-french-dressing" and water.

This was a bit of a disappointment. My 2-hours-past-eatting blood sugar was 180. 180 after "eatting good"! Earlier this week (or was it last week?) I had "a steak, medium boiled potatoe and broccoli" and my 2-hours-past-eatting blood sugar was much lower.

I can't seem to figure this food-to-blood-sugar correlation out very well. I guess I'll just have to keep blogging and reading ADA material until it begins to make sense...

04 December 2006

Breakfast: Weight Watchers Smart Ones Bistro Roast Beef with Gravy (medallions of roast beef in gravy withi portobello mushrooms and mashed potatoes)
Yesterday, when we were at Wally World looking for "frozen good-for-me food for my breakfast tomorrow", this meal sounded good. It wasn't until I pulled it out of the freezer at work that I discover the silly shit had mushrooms in it! Gross

Lunch: Pizza Hut where I had salad with varous topings, a couple of slices of "meat" pizza, much of a slice of cooked apple pizza, about a cup of apparently low sugar choclate pudding and a couple of glasses of "Diet Pepsi".

After lunch, I was feeling slightly nausious the whole afternoon. It makes me wonder if I was having a reaction to perhaps too much sugar?

Dinner: McDonald's Club Salad with exta croutons and a glass of water.

03 December 2006

Breakfast: Healthy Choice Beef Pot Roast with Gravy / Apple Cranberry Crisp / Roasted Potatoes and a can of D.P.

Snack: A left over pork chop from last night and some (a handful) of cashews...

Movie Snack: popcorn and a large glass of "Diet Pepsi"...

Dinner: Soft taco, something wrapped in a soft shell, rice (not very red), refried beans, chips and sausa and water plus a nice disk of flan!

Post Dinner Problems:I ate too soon to going to bed and kept feeling full and slightly ill. I ended up waking up with stomach juices in my mouth; fortunately, I was totally sober and snapped awake before I could have chocked on this liquid crap.

Dinner: Almost a pound of overcooked sir-loin, a small boiled potatoe, broccoli florettes and a couple of glasses of water...
Dillions had miniture French Baggettes (or hard crust loafs of French Bread; I ate about ½ of the one I bought and it was quite good.)

Snack: A slice of baloney and left over coffee...

Lunch: A McDonald's quarter ponder, fries and "Diet Coke" without ice.

Dinner: At epilepsy': Their steak and ribs combo, scoop of garlic mashed potatoes, nearly raw broccoli flowers and water. I s;lit an order of brownies (2) and scoops of vanilla ice cream (2) with Kathie. This meal lead to a 2hr-past-eating score of 224! I wonder which item really screwed up my blood? The ice cream? The potatoes? It's hard to tell...

Dinner: Steak, baked potatoe with sour creame and low fat spread, brococcoli and a beer (Mic).

else I can't recall...

Lunch: At Casey's Cowtown: "French" dip (roast beef on a bun)

D.P. The service has gotten a lot better now that we have
the same waitress...

Lunch: At Casey's Cowtown: Chicken Fried Chicken with white gravy, mashed potatoes with white gravy, corn (not that green crap), roll and butter and a couple of glasses of D.P.
The service was fairly good but part of the breading was cooked to being on the verge of being burned; I had to use a knife to cut it and my teeth got a workout...

Dinner: Healthy Choice Flavor Adventures Chicken Margherita (Chicken breast with Rib Meat, pasta and roasted garlic in a balsamic vinaigrette sauce), several "Triscuit Original" [crackers]. These are "baked whole grain wheat crackers" and are supposedly good for my heart...

Pre-bedtime snack: forgotten alas but it would have been small and not too bad for me...

Dinner: Salad, 3 baked skinless chicken fileys, scallooped potatoes, a little bit of rice, 2 rolls and butter and piece of cheesecake.

Post dinner: This was a Lions Cabinet meeting and I could have either read a book ("Hunters of Dune" by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson) in our room or I could go socialize in the hospitality room. I had interesting conversations with a very interesting young lade named "Jamie", her grandmother and several other people. It was one of the most enjoyable social events I've had this year! (I just wish my wife could have been there; she would have enjoyed it.) I also ate some brownies and maybe a cookie and some crackers and fuck the A1C test on 30 November.

Well, I still have most of the month to try to be good...

Thursday, November 02, 2006

02 November 2006

Breakfast: Aunt Jemima pancakes and sausage, with a cup of coffee and a can of D.P.

Snack: Someone brought in choclate fudge. I took enuf for three (3) bites (abut 1 to 11/2 tablespoons. The first bite tasted great; the second bite was fine but had the hint of "this insn't going to taste good for long" and the third tasted of wax and sugar and made me wonder why did I take this bite and why don't I spit it out???

I guess it still tasted good -er- adequate...

Lunch: Chicken from the 14th St Dillions, mashed potatoes, white gravy, salad, Larry's choclate cake and my home made vinalli ice creame. I was told my ice cream is my claim to fame. I was slightly hurt at first as I'd like to think I'm noted for other things but to the boys (and girls) at the office I'm not...

I can live with this...

Dinner: Fried pork chops, hash browns and water and later, a bottle of Mic Lager (a real Micelob, not that "Ultra" crap or anything with the word "light" or "lite" in it!).

Wednesday, November 01, 2006

Snack: bag of popcorn from the office machine (I forgot to write down the specifics from the bag). It's a good thing I'm leaving home in five (5!) minutes and am going to get lunch for my wife and me; I'm not only hungry but am thinking of a choclate milk shake. I guess I've got low sugar...

Lunch: At Arbys: "French Dip" with fries, part of a large order of Motzerello sticks (with tomato sauce) and a "large" glass of D.P.

Dinner: Boston Market (Home Style Meals) Roasted Port with Gravy and Garlic Redskin Mashed Potatoes and a glass of water. This didn't seem greasy enough for me to worry about vomiting later...

Monday, October 30, 2006

30 October 2006

Something curious happened last night. It seems that when I have salad with "normal" dressing, I end up peeing a couple of times that night. If I have a "low cal" dressing, I might be up three times! So, I'm going to gin up a blog entry listing the number of times I pee, with one category for peeing less than 2 hours after going to bed (the normal "drank too many liquid before bedtime") and a second for "diabetes caused late night urination" (for obvious reasons when peeing during the remainder of the night). I'll add a third entry for nights I barf (I don't process fats very well any more) and a link to my "food blogs" so that I can determine which meals are harming me. This will be a bit disquesting but from what I can tell, my food blog isn't even showing up on the "recent published blogs" so I don't think it'll get comments. The only threat to this will be me losing interest and not keeping up the entries...

Breakfast: Left over spaghetti and home made sauce plus a can of D.P. (The homemade sauce was 2 pounds of ground hamburger well browned, most of an onion added to the mix after draining the fat and adding the six (6) cans of tomato sauce, a very small pinch of chili powder, a very small pinch of ground cinnamon and several (3 to 5) shakes of a seasoning mixture called "Italian Seasoning"). Then, I took a chunk of Pharmason{sp} cheese and ground it onto the spaghetti and noodles. (So much better than the pre-ground canned stuff!)

Snack: One bag of Sunshine CHEEZE-IT Baked Snack Crackers (Net Wt. 1.5 oz)

Lots of sodium (360 mg) and some sugar (1g); no wonder this shit tastes so good! I'll have to come up with something safer to snack on at work. I suppose I could go with popcorn but the stuff from the microwave bag doesn't taste as good as these Cheeze-It. Probably a sign that the popcorn is beter for me?

I'll have to either stand at the stove and pop corn in a large pan (the old fashioned way) or finally get around to mounting my air corn popper somewhere.

Lunch: Healthy Choice Cheesy Chicken & Rice White Meat Chicken With Rice In Cheese Sauce Carrot & Broccoli Medley

Snack: I had a medium Dairy Queen choclate milk shake. I guess when I get too hungry, I just go for the sugar...

Dinner: Salad with some roasted chicken, some bacon bits, raw broccoli and low cal "French" dressing...

I drank water with this.

25 October 2006

Breakfast: Creame of wheat and a baggle baked in the office oven with a little low-cal spread on it. Also, a can of D.P. and a cup or two of coffee...

Lunch: We visited the Cimarron Kansas Lions Club. I had a chicken fried steak (really breaded minute steak) with white gravy, baked potatoe, roll, salad with French dressing and a couple of glasses of D.P. It was a "Mells' Diner" experience and not up to the standards of Casey's but still a nice break from Casey's and served to point up Mike Casey's virtues.

Still, a nice little diner for a small town.

Dinner: We went to the Spearville Lions Club and had salad, baked skinless boneless chicken, a rice and brocolli caserol, a couple of rolls and water.

Snack: When we got home, I took my evening pills (especially the Metormin!) and washed it down with a small glass of white whine. Then, Kathie brought herself a glass of red wine and be a "Mic" (Michelob Lager, not that God awful "Mic Ultra" or anything "lite" or "light"...)

Tuesday, October 24, 2006

24 October 2006

Breakfast: Weight Watchers Smart Ones Chicken Parmesan Bisto Selections Chicken Parmesan roasted chicken breast and spaghetti with marinara sauce topped with cheese.

Lunch: Left over roast beef and potatoes and a pair of cans of D.P.

Snack: I had a craving for ice creamme and went to Dairy Queen for a medium ice creamme cone dipped in chocolate. It was good and killed off my craving for ice cream cones (for the moment anyway...)

Dinner: Two hamberger patties and then I went to the Diabetics Seminar at the Senior Center. There, we were served samples of a "good" salad and a very small little bisquit, a very small little oatmeal cookie and had some water. I got home, fairly hungry and had some canned chicken. Yummmy....

Monday, October 23, 2006

23October 2006

Breakfast: Aunt Jemima pancakes and sausage and a can of D.P. (I would have had a cup of coffee but the person who usually makes the morning coffee is out of the offce. I had to wait till his boss made the coffee. I could make my own pot of brew but most folks seem to think I make it too weak...)

Lunch: Healthy Choice Familiar Favorites Chicken Fettuccini Alfredo chicken Breast Chunks and Fettuccini in Alfredo Sauce.

Dinner: A McDonald's Club salad and a glass of water.

Sunday, October 22, 2006

22 October 2006

Breakfast: Creame of wheat and two slices of sour dough bread (with low-cal spread on them) toasted in the office toaster. Also, a can of DP and later, some coffee.

Lunch: The rest of my leftover stew and a half peanut butter samwhich (peanut butter on a slice of sour dough bread) and a can of D.P.

Dinner: Oven cooked pot roast, cooked with chunked potatoes and carrots plus water for a drink and a glass of white whine.

Saturday, October 21, 2006

21 October 2006

Breakfast: oatmeal and coffee (some brown sugar on the oatmeal).

Snack: Small handful of cashews. I bought these from the office "vending" machine and haven't seen the worms that "came with" the stale peanuts. I didn't actually see the worms but was told about them.

Lunch: Left over beef stew with a bag of CHEEZE-ITs.

Dinner: My wife's "Mexican". This is a soft taco shell with smashed refried beans, hamberger cooked with spices and "yellow" cheese cooked in the microwae oven and then "light" sour cream, sausa, chopped tomatoes added (two of these and the left over lettuse as a salad) and a bottle of Michelob lager (just one as my desire for a beer was gone when I drank the last mouthful) and a glass of water. Oh, yes, a partial glass of water before dinner when washing down my evening pills...

Friday, October 20, 2006

20 October 2006

Breakfast: Aunt Jemima pancakes and sausage and a cup of coffee.
Lunch: Healthy Choice Chicken Broccoli Alfredo Chicken Breast and Broccoli in Alfredo Sauce with Fettuccini Pasta and a couple of cans of D.P. plus a 1.5oz bag of CEEZE-ITs...
Dinner: A Dillion's salad with low cal French dressing and a couple of glasses of water. After testing (and a ridicious 171 it was!) I had half a peanut butter on sour dough bread samwhich. (I wonder if peanut butter right before bed is causing my noise to stuff up?)

Thursday, October 19, 2006

19 October 2006

Lunch: McDonald's Club Salad with a "large" Diet Coke.

Snack: The rest (1/2 cup or so) of low cal vanillin ice creame with a home made sauce (about 1/2 2% milk, some dark choclate, about a teaspoon of baking power and a pinch of baking soda) nuked in the microwave...

Dinner: Homemade beef stew with stew beef, onions, garlic, carrots and potatoes and "ploppers". "Ploppers" were what I called bisquit "dumplings" when I was a very young child (i.e. 45 to 50 years ago). This is a cup or so of Bisquit with enough water to get it well wetted down and they are then spooned onto the surface of the stew. They are supposed to be more than dumplings; enough flour is supposed to leach off to thicken the stew. (It didn't this time around...)

The stew was slow cooked from about 7:30 am to around 5:45 pm. There was no danger of it being undercooked...

Wednesday, October 18, 2006

18 October 2006

Breakfast: Aunt Jemima pancakes, sausage and coffee.

Lunch: (At Casey's Cowtown): Chicken Fried Chicken, Mashed potatoes with white gravy, ottage cheese and two glasses of "Diet Pepsi".

Dinner: At Appllebe;: 10 oz steak with "Cajun" seasoning, garlic mashed potatoes, veggies and glasses of Diet Pepsi. I also ate some of Kathie's fried chicken stripes and some of
the "Mexican" rice.

Home: A very small slice (the heel of the heel of the loaf) of Sour Dough Bread.

Tuesday, October 17, 2006

17 October 2006

Breakfast: Aunt Jemima pancakes and sausage, a cup of coffee,
a chunk of dark choclate and about a cup of low sodium V8.

Lunch:

Monday, October 16, 2006

16 October 2006

Breakfast: Cream of wheat, three half slices of toasted sour dough bread and a cup of coffee.

Lunch: McDonals's club salad and a (too large) large glass of Diet Coke.

Dinner: Healthy Choice Beef Pot Roast with Gravy/ Apple Cranberry Crisp/ Carrots/ Roasted Potatoes and a can of D.P.

Pre-bed snack: I was in a bad mood and had a large coffee cup of White Zin (it was enuf to make me feel tipsy) and part of a can of canned chicken (I didn't bother to see how much sodium this had...)
I was wondering why my "White Zin" didn't taste quite right lately. It turned out my wife had bought me Franzia White Merlot and put it in the usual spot in the refrigerator. It wasn't bad; fortunately, I've only drunk it once a month or so and I don't expect to get too fond of it...

Sunday, October 15, 2006

15 October 2006

Breakfast: Shredded wheat, coffee and a D.P.

Lunch: 1 1/2 Rubans and 1 1/2 bowls of homemade (mix) chicken soup with canned chicken added and a D.P. or two.

Dinner: Healthy Choice Chicken Margherita White Meat Chicken With Angel Hair Pasta & Roasted Garlic In Balsamic Vinaigrette Sauce and (of course) a can of D.P.

I don't dare have more than one can of D.P. since I typically eat dinner around 7:30 pm t0 8 pm (I'm at work) and that gives me just over 4 hours before I try to go to bed (around 12:15 am to 12:30 am).

Saturday, October 14, 2006

14 October 2006

Breakfast: Kathie made scrambled eggs, well cooked (for me) bacon, 1/4 tray of Serra Lee coffee cake and a can of D.P. and coffee

Lunch:

Dinner:

Wednesday, October 11, 2006

Snack: Most of a bag of popcorn and a can of D.P.

Dinner: A Dillion's salad...

Tuesday, October 10, 2006

10 October 2006 (partial for dinner)

Breakfast: Yes (probably Aunt Jemima)

Lunch: Not noted down...

Dinner: Salad with (unfortunately) regualar French dressing and a glass of water. This lead to a high (142) blood glucose reading. So, I had a gin and tonic (probably didn't jack that 142 any...)

death by abundance

In this Slate article, ("Please Do Not Feed the Humans" or "The global explosion of fat") William Saletan discusses how our species evolved in an environment of food scarcity. The recent (last century) abundance of food has happened too fast for evolution to counter said abundance with improved inherited "time to stop eating" mechanisms and anti-obesity, anti-diabetes, anti-heart attack mechanisms, etc. We're being killed by the survival mechanisms that allowed our ancestors to survive long enough to beget us!

I remember worrying about losing 10 pounds in high school. I also remember girls being mocked for being 5 to 10 pounds overweight. Now, I'm probably 50 pounds overweight and can't seem to lose that weight. Sadly, I work with young men who are overweight to the point of looking pregnant.

Decades ago, I noted that poor blacks in southern Mississippi seemed to be the most obese. I later realized they were eating cheap and very high calory foods. A fairly snotty and apparently anti-American Brit ("The end of obesity?" by Gwynne Dyer) commented on this as well. This Brit expected the obesity epidemic to fizzle out due to "global warming" and a return to food scarcity by the end this century. (I take a certain amount of comfort in the realization that diabetes and probable heart problems and simply age will render me dead well before then. I was born in 1951...)

In spite of my gloomy belief the human race will kill itself off in the next century or two (probably via that old standby, killing over religious differences). Perhaps not the death of the entire species, maybe a small enough fraction of the current overpopulation will survive and humans will once again be were they were for so many millienum: on the endangered species list! (I smirk whilst reading this but I really hope it doesn't happen. I want the various kids in my family and the families of friends to survive. I'd be lying if I said I worried about foreigners...)

Monday, October 09, 2006

09 October 2006

Breakfast: Cream of wheat, 11/2 slices of whole wheat toast and a cup or two of coffee.

Lunch: An Arby salad and part of a large order of "onion peddles" and a D.P.

Sunday, October 08, 2006

08 October 2006

Breakfast: Aunt Jemima pancakes and sausage with a cup of coffee.

Lunch: Kathie made roast chicken with dressing and broccoli flowers. I also had a couple of cans of D.P. (No intestional distress however...)

Dinner: We held a bit of a batchelor party for a fellow at work. We split a couple of take out pizzas (all meat on 1/2 and meat on the other). I had a couple of cans of D.P. (with no intestional distress)

Home: I wanted to have a gin and tonic but we were out of gin so I had tonic and a squirt of lemon juice. (I didn't want to waste any lime juice.) I told myself "this is a Sunday so I'll have to buy more gin tomorrow in spite of telling Kathie that I think we drink too much of it..." Silly me! I forgot that in Kansas not only are the booze shops (for "hard stuff") closed on Sunday but they are closed on holidays...

Saturday, October 07, 2006

07 October 2006

Breakfast: Scrambled eggs, bacon (well fried), a bacon samwhich, Serra Lee coffee cake and a cup of coffee.

Lunch: A brot with sourkrat, a bierrot (not a Gemini Beirrot), a large bottle of DP and before all this: a bottle of Sasfaraks{sp}.

Friday, October 06, 2006

06 October 2006

Breakfast: Aunt Jemima pancakes, sausage and coffee.

Lunch: We went to Montana Mike's as it is our 27th wedding anniversary. I had most of a 16 oz rib eye steak (I cut out the fat and what I too full to eat), most of a "loaded" baked potatoe, most of a large roll and most of a piece of chocolate cake. I took the remnants of my lunch home with me. I also had two large glasses of Diet Pepsi.

Post lunch I again had diherra; I've either got "worms" or an excessive amount of "Diet Pepsi" gives me the trots. I think the later explanation is the likely one...

Dinner: South Beach Diet Asian Inspired Orange Beef slices & Brown rice in Orange Sauce with Broccoli, bamboo shoots & carrots. Plus some chips and a single can of D.P.

Post work snack: a couple of slices of bread with catsup after Kathie and I split a bottle of cheap champaign. This was to celebrate our 27th Wedding Anniversary.

Thursday, October 05, 2006

05 October 2006

Breakfast: Aunt Jemima pancakes and sausage and a cup of coffee.

Lunch: At the "Dodge House": A large hamberger, small amount of fries, a 20 oz bottle of water (which cost 20¢ at "Sams" but which sold for $4 at the "Cessna Arena", where we saw the "Rolling Stones") and a can of D.P.

Something didn't agree with me at lunch and I ended up with diaherra about 2 hours after eatting.

Snack before lunch: a donut; and snack after lunch: a choclate chip cookie.

Dinner: Left over brocolli from last night, left over rice pilof with store bought sliced roast beef and gravy and two (!) cans of D.P.

Not my day for eatting, I guess. Something didn't agree with me at lunch and I ended up with diaherra about 2 hours after eating.
Snack: After a somewhat distressing phone call to my youngest brother, I had a couple of slices of sour dough bread with catsup on them. I put some sugar free apple sauce in a large coffee cup, added ground cinnamon{sp} and it was fine. I had a glass of water and skipped the beer I'd initially thought of having and didn't go to the effort of making myself a gin and tonic. The truth is, I don't think I make them very well and so I don't try...

My wife does a much better job with the G and T!

Wednesday, October 04, 2006

04 October 2006

Breakfast: Cream of wheat, two slices of whole wheat toast and coffee.

Lunch: "Chicken Fried Chicken" at Casey's Cowtown: Chicken Fried Chicken with white gravy, mashed potatoes with white gravy, cottage cheese vice the (presumedly) vile Green Beans, a fresh baked roll and some kind of sprad and two glasses of Diet Pepsi.

Snack: About 1/3 cup of the low fat choclate ice cream. (I'll have to put the name in later...)

Dinner: Left over baked chicken and Kathie's Rice Pilof (from the other night) and some broccoli flowers I boiled up this afternoon. Plus, a can of D.P.

Snack: Bag of popcorn...

3 October 2006

Breakfast: Shredded wheat, slice of whole wheat bread with peanut butter, coffee.

Lunch: Burger King salad and a "Diet Coke".

Snack: It was hot out and I got the cravings: I boutht a small container of reduced fat double choclate ice cream and had maybe a 1/3 cup of it...

Dinner: A bag of crackers, Healthy Choice Chicken Broccoli Alfredo Chicken Breast and Broccoli in Alfredo Sauce with Fettuccini Pasta and a can of D.P.

Pre-bedtime snack: Two slices of sour dough bread with no sugar grape jelly and a small coffee cup of White Zin (which tasted too damn sweet)

2 October 2006

Breakfast: At the Hotel at Old Town in Wichita: Kind of liquid scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, pieces of nicely overcooked bacon, coffee, orange juice and water. It was effectively the same breakfast as yesterday.

1 October 2006

Breakfast: At the Hotel at Old Town in Wichita: Kind of liquid scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, several slices of ham, coffee, orange juice and water.

Snack at Church (the Unity Church of Wichita, Kansas): Half a cup of coffee and a store bought chocolate chip cookie.

Lunch: At Olive Garden in Wichita: Salad, bread sticks, plate of spaghetti and metabolic, then a bowl of angel hair spaghetti (also with meat sauce) and sausage and several (3) glasses of Diet Coke.

Dinner: At the Cessna Sports Stadium in Wichita, waiting for the Rolling Stones Concert: The first two bottles of water cost $400 each. Then, we each had a jerked meat samwich ($600 each) and another couple of bottles of water at $400 each. We were outside and it was hot but we didn't have the money to buy any more water.

They didn't have any water fountains inside!

Well, when we returned to the hotel, I was very thirsty. So, I drank a draft beer (a Fat Tyre) and then a bottle of "MGD" (Miller Genuine Draft) beer. I bought a burritte warmed it in the hotel room microwave and it reminded me (later) of the old adage: "Hunger is the best appetizer!"

30 September 2006

Breakfast: Aunt Jamama pancakes and sausage, slice of whole wheat bread and peanut butter and a couple of cups of coffee.

Lunch: At "Rick's" in West Pratt: Roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, mixed veggies of which I recognized some carrots and a big roll. I had either Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi (who could tell them apart at "Rick's"? Actually, I don't recall.)
The meal was grossly adequate but the service a bit poor (a waitress didn't bother coming into work) and Kathie's water was not refilled. We'll not be going back there; this was a one-time "I wonder what they're like? The locals must like it." Sometimes the adage about "it must be good, the locals go there" doesn't hold up and the locals go there because it is the one place to go...)

Dinner: At River City Brewery in inner city Wichita: Two brew pubs beers, a bowl of cheese/broccoli soup, a nice (albeit too much fat) steak, baked potato and two brownies with ice cream and chocolate sauce.

At the bar of the Hotel at Old Town, whilst listening to Patrick play piano and chatting: Three weak gin and tonics and strawberry daquari {sp}.

28 September 2006

Breakfast: Shredded wheat and a cup of coffee plus a slice of whole wheat toast with peanut butter.

I had the trots after my morning pills and coffee and probably too much milk on my shreded wheat. I felt fine when I went for a walk but started getting the stomach rumbling (in a manner of speaking) when I started the walk. I barely made it home and to the toilete...

Why do they call it The Trots when the last thing you want to do is move faster than a walk and you're walking as tight assed as a rictus faced model on the runway?

Lunch: Precooked Roast Beef and frozen mashed potatoes, with the left over gravy soaked into two slices of whole wheat bread and a D.P.

Dinner: Healthy Choice Beef Pot Roast with Gravy/ Apple Cranberry Crisp/ Carrots/ Roasted Potatoes and a can of D.P.

This was quite good. Several weeks ago, I got tired of eatting this and went with other types of good for you food. I think I've gotten tired of these now...

Lunch: At Casey's Cowntown: Chicken Fried Chicken, mashed potatoes with white gravy, corn, a fresh warm roll and butter. A glass of diet pepsi that tasted of Dr. Pepper, which I sent back. Then, a glass of what might have been Diet Pepsi and another glass of the same.

NOTE: Maybe they have a new cook at Casey's? The gravy did not taste of onion salt (or was it garlic salt?) and my stomach was not upset afterwards. (It was the next morning but that is probably a different matter...)

Snack: A handfull of peanuts.

Dinner: Healthy Choice Chicken Margherita White Meat Chicken With Angel Hair Pasta & Roasted garlic In Balsamic Vinaigrette Sauce with a can of D.P.

The next morning, my blood sugar level was 142. This is significantly higher than I thought it should be. I'll have to see if I can get it down lower Thursday night for the Friday morning testing. Maybe taking it easy after getting home from an evening shift was a good idea when I started using it a couple of years ago?

Had a glass of ice water at home and a can of D.P.; I couldn't drink any whine (wine! wine!) since I planned on picking Kathie up at the airport around 11 pm.)

About 4 hours later, I started feeling ill so I took a couple of shots of "pink. This didn't help. I realized I had the sympthoms of "I've-gone-to-bed-and-an-hour-later-I'm-going-to-barf". So, I stuck my finger down my throat and the expected result - vomiting - occurred and I immediatly felt better.

I think this simply means I can't eat Italian too soon before bed. Either that or that "garlic butter screwed me up good!

So, I squated over the "Porcinline Godess", stuck my finter down my throat 3 times and felt better afterwards.

Some day, I'll finally realize which food will screw me up later!

Post Dinner: A local beer and then a gin and tonic and a White Russian. Probably too much alcohol but I think they stinted a bit on the booze...

This was the best "deal" we got for our money that day. We'd have been well advised to have stopped at the food court during the day and then we'd not have been so hungry...

Wednesday, September 06, 2006

06 September 2006

Breakfast: Bacon, two fried eggs, two slices of toast and coffee.

Lunch: At Casey's Cowtown: A large hamburger, fries and tow glasses of D.P. (the service was slow on the refill)

Dinner: Homemade beef stew, slow cooked all day, two glasses of a White Zin and two heafty shots of "Pink" (Pepto Bismol) for desert.

I don't know if it was the White Zin that upset my stomach or the grease (olive oil actually) I fried the onions in and browned the breaded beef in. About an hour after eatting, I started feeling sharp pain in the gut. It was severe indigestion. So, I took my dog for a walk in the backyard, walked over to the fense between my house and the vacant house to the north, stuck my finger down my throat and got back a couple of reluctant little barfs. It made me feel better.

I went to bed about 11:15 pm and almost immediately felt a return of the gut pain and acid started coming back up. So, after being unable to find a comfortable sleeping position, I quietly went into the bathroom, stuck my finger down my throat and barfs four times. I thought about trying for a fifth time but for some reason I didn't. (I should have!)

Anyway, after I flushed and washed my hands, my wife wondered into the bathroom and told me I should have gone to bed before now. After all, I had to get up at 5 am. She didn't believe I'd already been in bed about an hour...

Ah, it's charming little details like the above that makes me suspect there is a reason my blog hasn't made it to "blog of note!"

Speaking of red, that was the colour of what was coming up. I sometimes wonder if I've got a bleeding ulser...

4 September 2006

Breakfast: Aunt Jamami pancakes and sausage, coffee and a can of D.P. Also, a slice of bread with peanut butter on one half and Welch’s grape jelly on the other.

Lunch: McDonald's SW Club salad and a can of D.P.
I've a "bone to pick" with the service at the McDonalds:

I got a Mexican clerk who had a bit of trouble with his English. It took a couple of tries to get my order across. When this happened, he walked over to put the first salad into a plastic bag. A couple of Mexican boys (well "youths" in their late teens) walked in. "My" clerk just had to greet them and they chatted for a half minute or so in rapid Mexican. While "my" clerk was putting the first salad into the plastic bag, one of his buddies said something. "My" clerk put the salad back on the shelf and immediately hustled over to get this other boy a glass of ice and water. Only after his compoderie had left did "my" clerk get around to bagging up both my salads. He did fine with getting the salad dressings and the forks and even gave me an extra bag of almonds.

It just irritated me that an unpaying buddy of the clerk would get preferential treatment over a paying customer. Oh, well, "my" clerk probably realizes:

  1. He is just a temporary employee and
  2. I am just another customer who will come back anyway...

One of the old ladies (whom I had bitched to before about screwups with the salads) asked "did he get everything you asked for"? "Yes".

Maybe he wasn't such a bad "crewman" but it bugged me that a walk in buddy would get precedence over an old fart paying customer (me).

Snack: There is just something about eating healthy (well, salads) that leads me to food cravings. This is especially true now that I've got a deadline: I have less than 3 months to get my blood sugar down enough to "get a good score" on my A1C test on 30 Novemeber 2006. It is the knowledge that I have to be strintent with what I eat that is making it hard. Hence, the desire for a "bad" snack.

Anyway, the 14th Street Dillions had sugar free pumkin pies for $2.50 each. I bought one and some "lite" frozen "whipped creame". I ate between a 1/4 and a 1/3 of the pie. I was hungry...

Dinner: Healthy Choice Chicken Broccoli Alfredo Chicken Breast and Broccoli in Alfredo Sauce with Fettuccini Pasta and a can of D.P.

Pre-bed Snack: A piece of punckin {sp} pie and low cal spread and water...

Sunday, September 03, 2006
